We process SAR imagery on land only when the image is partly over sea as our interest is focused on the ocean. Therefore, the data are projected to the ocean level. We don’t apply any land based orthorectification as the portal is very ocean oriented.

7-day composite of wave heights from Scotland to France (dark red is 8 m) from SWOT KaRIN instrument (22 to 28 August 2025), showing land shadows and effects of currents on wave heights. In particular "fingers" of higher waves are pointing in the wave propagation direction and are caused by a focusing of waves in currents located "upwave" of the measurement.

I was looking at SWOT ocean data using @oceandatalab.bsky.social great OVL tool ... when I noticed some funny pixels on land... and zooming it happens to be clear cutting patterns in the Oregon forests. I'm curious to know more about forestry management in that area!

Image of sea ice in the Southern Ocean taken by Sentinel 2 on Dec. 3 2024. the patterns of ice fractures in the center of the image seems to wrap around 66.62°S , 169.80°E , as if dragged by an ocean eddy.

I was looking again at these fantastic Sentinel 2 images over sea ice. I know nothing about ice rheology but the patterns of the fractures in the ice are fascinating. I can't help thinking there is an ocean eddy in the middle of this image, dragging the ice around.

Large waves encountered by #VG2024 #vendeeglobe skippers these past few days. More than 8m SWH was observed by #Copernicus altimeters. The large waves and their propagation were well predicted by #MeteoFrance MFWAM model. More information at
