The vast majority of anti-social behaviour policies describe young people congregating in public places as "anti-social behaviour." Youth clubs are basically a thing of the past. Libraries are for silence, not socialising. School is for learning. Where are kids supposed to socialise?

Great article, James. It's worth mentioning that the Audit Scotland report does say that the increase in the number of reported ASNs is partly because of better overall awareness. The 509% increase in ASNs for bereavement, for example, would be a real cause for concern if this wasn't the case!
My favourite bit of this article is the bit where they have to admit that the wealth-hoarding boomer stereotype is 100% accurate.
Classroom support also prevents violence against teachers, reduces the use of exclusions, and improves attainment levels. We need to focus on prevention not punishment if we want to support young people to thrive and support teachers to do what they do best.
We've known for years that exclusions are a key contributor to young people being in conflict with the law. How is that "setting up pupils well for adult life"? What really sets young people up for adult life is support.
Teachers being told that classroom violence is caused by their classes not being "fun or engaging enough" is absolutely inexcusable. But we should ask what "consequences" pupils should face? Exclusion?

๐งต(5) Youth clubs and physical spaces for young people to hangout are being closed all across Scotland. If Scotland bans young people from social media while also cutting funds to youth clubs, how are young people supposed to interact outside of the school yard?
๐งต(4) Bans might widen inequalities, as tech-savvy or privileged young people will still find ways to access platforms, while others are left out. This digital divide could create further disparity in social and cultural participation.
๐งต(3) Without social media, young people may lose access to important educational content, support networks, and activism opportunities. Many use platforms to learn about global issues, connect with peers, and advocate for change, contributing positively to their community.
๐งต(2) Such bans might lead young people to lie about their age to access platforms, exposing them to greater dangers, such as inadequate safeguards and unchecked exposure to adult predators and even exploitative organisations (such as gambling sites).
๐งต(1) Banning social media to under-16s is a terrible idea.
1. It violates Article 15 of the UNCRC. This guarantees children's right to freedom of association, a key aspect of modern social interactions which increasingly occur online.
