shoegaze banger of the day is a new release from Magic Shoppe
fresh band that channels classic shoegaze sounds (MBV, Swervedriver)
Paper program for a concert by the Brooklyn Symphony Orchestra, with music by Aram Khachaturian, Alejandro Basulto, Carlos ChΓ‘vez, and Georges Bizet.
Agenda (Brooklyn afternoon edition). Note the marvelously unconventional program, including a world premiere.
Whoa. Great lineup on both stages this year.
Ironically maybe, this account strongly supports skepticism about the term βethnomusicologyβ!
yeahhhhhh, about that rhetoric
Tupac and Dr. Dreβs βCalifornia Loveβ was released December 3, 1995. That fact has me thinking about a bunch of songs, especially songs about the complex country of California open.substack.com/pub/shinebri...
"Peace" without justice is just the silence of the oppressed
Combining record reviewing with the season is suiting me just fine today, especially as I dig back into a variety of older classics to add to Shfl over the month. Haven't heard the Kingston Trio's _The Last Month of The Year_, a fave of my mom's, in a long time, and it absolutely lands beautifully.
My daughter looking shocked with happiness as she FaceTimes with sherb the dog, who is being scratched about the chin
My daughter facetiming with her favorite dog, Sherb; May we all find this much joy in anything, ever
3 women in matching white blouses and khaki green dresses on a stage with large wooden mortars and pestles. One woman, African American, kneels with her arms holding a pole as if in shackles.
Two women embrace in exhausted affection while a third sits, head in lap.
This is why art. Sometimes a performance says exactly what it needs to. The theater program and The Arts Center at NYU Abu Dhabi presented Ikwe na odu [Igbo for βmortar and pestleβ], a 6-hour performance installation conceived & directed by Chinasa Vivian Ezugha around food insecurity and conflict.
#MathSky #physics I always look forward to finding recommendations for lesser known #classicalmusic. But now and then it's pleasant to read something new about a familiar warhorse.
A concept album here begging to be made.
Inject this into my veins

AMS/SMT people, I'm starting to put together my conference schedule so if you have a book project you'd like to talk to me about, DM or email at robin.james at palgrave-usa dot com
If yr lucky enough to have a stable academic job, dissertations should be a sizable % of yr reading diet
So proud that @musicasecreta.bsky.social gets a mention in this piece, too. Weβve been working for over 30 years to help people understand that womenβs voices are at the centre of #earlymodern music, not the periphery. After 2 almost miraculous days recording with them, makes me quite emotional π
I had one of those long, convoluted dreams about AMS. Some of you were in it.
Tenure-track musicology position in the department of music at UNC. Some great people there, spread the word!

Thanks to the Kol Nidre musicology lecture that @jamiedsongs.bsky.social shared, I just learned about this psychedelic Kol Nidre by The Electric Prunes.

I am delighted to share that my first book project, American Jews and the Making of the New York Opera Industry, 1880-1940, is now under preliminary contract with Oxford University Press!
got annoyed with the constant news cycle of older rock guys talking about trans people being considered cultural news, and I decided to write down my feelings on it all in Paste www.pastemagazine.com/music/transp...
Three women sit in a bar in Bangkok circa the mid to late 1960s, waiting for foreign men (the image is ambiguous as to what exactly theyβre waiting for). Screenshot is taken from Facebook with a thai-language caption explaining that the price of a coke was 10 baht
wanted to share an image from my upcoming book thatβs especially striking. Three Thai women drink and smoke in a bar, waiting (the caption says) for foreign men. Circa 1966.
Pictures of the US war in vietnam are usually of combat, but Iβd guess this kind of scene was a whole lot more common.
When I was working on my dissertation in 2014, I was at two institutions: one as a student and one as visiting faculty. Neither library could get me digital scores, the only format the composer had available. They just... didn't know how.
This is good to see.
