I don't see how this would be nearly as unpleasant as a pap smear, honestly.

Not true. Elon is in there.
And Melania.

Theyβre taking kids from Minnesota and sending them to detention camps. Theyβre shooting American citizens in the street and locking investigators out of the crime scenes. The world is watching what happens next.
Over on Mastodon, we call them "toots."
Non-masked MN National Guard are out handing out hot chocolate, coffee and donuts to protesters. One simple act has de-escalated the situation and helped gain the trust of people. See the difference between professional soldiers and the pretend tough guys in CBP and ICE?
Also... join the Fediverse. It has almost all the features you mentioned and does not operate for profit.

I like the approach to regulation that says that Section 230 (immunity from being sued over stuff you publish) shouldn't apply to companies that are actively deciding what their users see in their feed through algorithms.
Nonviolence has a BETTER historical track record of success than violence. Because ultimately the bad guys tend, by definition, to be better at violence than the good guys.

It still takes a lot of courage - more than violent resistance, honestly. A lot of nonviolent resistors can be killed before the end. Ghandi was shot and killed. Martin Luther King was shot and killed. But they won anyway.
10/11
And nonviolence is a much better way than violence to get EVERYONE to join in. When you are a threat, people will defend themselves from you. When you are not a threat, people will join you. And then the social construct collapses. His power goes away.
9/11
This is how dictators fall. Ultimately it happens when everyone, including the people who were supposed to enforce their orders, starts disobeying their orders.
8/11
A court martial involves a court, which might agree with the soldier about following illegal orders. And even if not, how many people can they court martial? When the military disobeys, who can he threaten THEM with?
7/11
What are they going to do when ordered to kill nonviolent protesters who are no threat to them, or to their friends and family? To nonviolent protesters who ARE their friends and family? Why would they follow that order? For a paycheck? To avoid court martial?

Say Trump realizes that 3000 ICE agents is not enough (there are millions of us just in the metro area alone, and ICE is already having trouble recruiting). So he invokes the insurrection act and sends in the military.
5/11
Nonviolence is when we all just stop doing what he says. Sure, there will be people who will try to act like he still does have power and punish us for our disobedience, but the trick is not caring what they do to us, and disobeying anyway.
4/11
Political power is also a social construct. Trump has power only to the extent that we all act like he has power. Of people stop doing what he says, he just becomes an old man yelling at clouds.
3/11
Is everyone familiar with the idea of a "social construct"? Like borders - they are just imaginary lines, but they are real because we make them real by acting as if they are real. Same thing with the value of money. Same thing with the meaning of words.
2/11
People think that nonviolence works by appealing to the conscience of the bad guys, and that really it doesn't usually work, because by definition the bad guys have no conscience. But that is not what nonviolence is.

Okay. But he knows we are, and we know we are. So it seems like splitting hairs to me. How perfect does the wording in a pull quote have to be? Does it really make a difference how exactly he phrases his BlueSky posts?
"We can - we must - speak out loudly, urgently but also peacefully."
What's ambiguous about that?
This is really our only path forward. We can't just roll over. But if we escalate this into a violent conflict, the US government will win. They're better at violence.

NEW: Data released by ICE shows that virtually the entire growth of detention in the last few months has been among people with no criminal record at all - no prior convictions (no matter how minor) and no pending criminal charges.

Please, I need to know! I will accept any plausible answer that isn't "they died in that barn because all of our heroes forgot about them."
Thank you!
