I want to know about the lives of more than just 18% of the world population and while with German and Japanese I can speak with roughly 22% of the world, we need to share that task. US Americans need language education to communicate with our fellow human beings.

The most spoken languages worldwide 2023 | Statista The language spoken by most people worldwide is English ahead of Mandarin.

Around the world, English might be the most commonly spoken language at 1.5 billion, but that is ironically only 18% of the global population. English speakers are a language minority worldwide. www.statista.com/statistics/2...

That also means that 18% spoke another language at home. The US is not monolingual.

Language Spoken at Home for the Population 5 Years and Over: 2000 Source: Census 2000 Special Tabulation 224

According to 2000 Census data, 82% of Americans 5 years and older spoke only English at home. That's a lot of monolingualism. I wonder how it stands now. www.census.gov/data/tables/...

Great ideas! I wish I could argue their relationship with our course on Muromachi period performing arts. Do you have any that include intercultural understanding or Japanese history? We're analyzing this movie with students: youtu.be/iGL4ETxVKd8?...

I am so with going plastic free and have been reducing for years, but I also just made a large purchase of Japanese sweets for a school visit with my college students. Any ideas for reducing plastic waste at the next opportunity for community engagement are very welcome!

It was such a pleasure to host Kendall Heitzman on campus last week and talk about ongoing projects and the opportunities for translation. Thank you to everyone who came out to hear his reading/lecture!
