Vector illustration of Pakicetus attocki, a bizarre early whale relative, laying on its stomach looking at the viewer. This strange animal has long legs with hooved feet, a thick hairless tail, small ears and a long, narrow skull lined with sharp teeth for catching fish and other small animals. Its eyes are positioned up at the top of the skull as in hippos to see over the water line. The artiodactyl is reddish brown with a lighter underside

Illustration of three detailed views of Unio Cumingii shells, a genus related to Gastropoda. The top shell is shown with intricate growth rings and a textured surface, highlighting its natural ridges and concentric patterns. The middle shell is displayed open, revealing the smooth, inner surface with subtle ridges and structural lines. The bottom object appears elongated and narrow, demonstrating another shell form or part of the organism. The drawing uses fine lines for shading and texture, emphasizing the shells' shape and surface features for scientific observation. The style reflects early 19th-century natural history illustration techniques.

a Megamastax explores very shallow waters in search of food, it kicks up fine sediment as it swims along

Megamastax is the largest Silurian bony fish found so far. it was only known from a lower jaw bone for many years until 2026 when a full skull was found allowing palaeontologists to find where it may sit in the fish family tree. Its head was incredibly wide at the base but also somewhat flat making it look vaguely like a squashed cone, one of the most interesting features of Megamastax is its tooth cushions which are small bulbs of teeth that were probably used to secure prey in place

an artificial light illuminates an Ornitholestes trying to sleep amongst the branches of a ginkgoale with cf. Eretmophyllum leaves

Ornitholestes is a small theropod dinosaur that is of uncertain relation to other maniraptorans (the group of "bird-like" dinosaurs such as Velociraptor, Gallimimus, Oviraptor, and others), though some evidence points to it potentially being the most basal member of Oviraptorosauria. Ornitholestesโ€•unlike its depiction in Walking With Dinosaursโ€•did not possess a bony crest on its snout, it had a rectangular snout with a long tail and elongated second digits similar toโ€•but not exactly the same asโ€•dromaeosaurs

cf. Eretmophyllum leaves are a kind of ginkgoale leaf known from the Morrison formation where Ornitholestes is from, they had an overall elongate profile with a variable amount of small lobes at the top but typically three

in a murky ephemeral pond, a Tanyka swivels its jaw around to feast on the abundant algae present in the water, its lower jaw is the only thing in focus. a blurry forest of Calamites can be spotted in the background

Tanyka is a basal-tetrapod from Brazil only known from its lower jaws that suggest it was able to rotate its lower jaws in a novel way, the authors suggest that this feature accompanied by its unique tooth plates could mean it was herbivorous, but they make no definite conclusion

Calamites is a tree sized relative of horsetails which is known from the same formation as Tanyka, they looked vaguely like horsetails growing like cone-shaped spruce trees

an Eosteus swims slightly above the other members of its school

Eosteus is the oldest known well preserved and articulated bony fish. it's known from China and holds a wealth of information about the origins of bony fish and how we can go about researching basal members of Osteichthyes in the future. it appeared unlike any fish today with low-set eyes, large spines infront of all of its fins (save for the caudal fin), with the dorsal and anal fins being held up by the spines, and also elongate rhombic scales across its body

Illustration of a detailed, scientific drawing of a shrimp, labeled "Plesiopenaeus edwardsianus." The main image shows the shrimpโ€™s full body in profile, highlighting its segmented exoskeleton, long thin antennae extending widely above, multiple detailed legs, and a rounded tail. Two smaller inset drawings focus on the shrimpโ€™s head from different angles, emphasizing its compound eyes, mouthparts, and antennae structure. The illustration uses red and brown tones with fine shading to show anatomical details, intended for scientific study from the 1889 Monaco yacht research campaign.

The new iguanodont with novel skin coverings. In addition to the large scute-like scales on the tail, the body is covered with what the author's describe as "spikes". The largest ones are about 4 cm long but almost a cm thick, resembling short quills. The smaller ones are hair or eyelash-like.

Mirebrute troggoths are hulking, scaled humanoids with large tusks and ears. They spend most of their time marinating in the swamp, eating carcasses and thickening their hide. When captured by the greenskinned orruks, they become mounts for the most bully riders. Despite being harnessed and driven forwards, they hold onto their weapons freely, swinging at anything they feel compelled to.

Itโ€™s #WarhammerWednesday with a Mirebrute Troggoth! These swamp-dwelling beasts can fully regenerate from horrific injury, recovering from lost limbs and โ€œcertainโ€ death. Painfully stupid, they are given massive clubs and ridden into battle by the tribes of swamp orruks.
