Census records for Indigenous peoples are fascinating. My great-grandmother was recorded as neither speaking nor writing English & Diné (Navajo) wasn’t adopted for reading or writing. They didn’t recognize her speaking an Indigenous language. Also, she lived in a log house (hogan) with dirt floors 🪶
