We are hearing that the declaration supposed to be finalized tomorrow is problematic. Governments need to listen to what social movements and indigenous peoples are saying.

In the the final plenary panel of #ICARRD+20 Prof Jun Borras tells governments that, as both the academic conference and social movements’ forum here in Cartagena have declared, land tenure security “for all” and token land recognition are not genuine agrarian reform.

A new UN report launched here at #ICARRD+20 reveals the shocking state of land inequality in the world. 10% of the largest landholdings encompassed 89% of all farmland. 23% of the worlds land users feel that they may lose access to land in the next few years.

In the US we need land reform. We need to recognize those who were exploited and dispossessed. We need to make land restitution to Indigenous Peoples, black and brown communities. We need regulation to stop growing inequality. We redistribution for young farmers and farm workers who are landless.

Attending the Land Life & Society Conference at U of Cartagena with over 200 experts on land plus representatives of Indigenous Peoples, peasants, pastoralists and fishers, was a great warm up for #ICARRD+20. Everyone agrees we need to address land inequality. Colombia is a starting point.
