Statement from MAJ President Nick Andrews: Peaceful civic engagement is a cornerstone of American democracy and a vital check on government power. As lawyers we swear an oath to support the Constitution and cannot stay silent in the face of government conduct that violates basic principles of due process and the rule of law. The recent fatalities in Minnesota, where federal immigration agents shot and killed two American citizens amid public protests, should deeply concern every defender of civil liberties. These tragedies underscore the fragile state of constitutional protections when citizens exercise their rights to free speech and peaceful assembly. We stand in solidarity with all Americans who exercise their constitutional rights to protest, assemble, and hold authorities accountable. MAJ remains committed to defending constitutional protections and the rule of law, demanding full transparency in investigations, and ensuring that the rights of all are respected and protected.
MAJ is committed to upholding the rule of law and access to justice. The rule of law is the foundation on which our nation was built, and actions that undermine due process and violate the constitutional rights of Americans degrade the core principles of our democracy.
We remember.
We honor the millions of lives lost in the Holocaust and recommit ourselves to confronting hatred and discrimination in all forms. MAJ stands with survivors, descendants, and communities everywhere in the pursuit of justice and humanity.
