Wondering if the people who are really into AI now were the kids who were really into the PBS show Ghostwriter back in the 90s...

...and whether or not AI is currently helping a group of kids solve mysteries

Decline and Fall A discussion with two political scientists about how we in the U.S. got here, and what change might require.

Thanks to @sargeinpolipsych.bsky.social for having me and Eric McDaniel on his Circumscription podcast, where we talked about background leading up to this moment in U.S. history, what it might take for change to occur, and what social science can tell us about all of that. Check it out here:

Heartbreaking. The University of Nebraska will terminate its entire Earth science department.

One of the country's most successful and respected geology & climate programs: gone.

When ideologues & politicians are threatened by the very act of studying climate change, I wonder: who of us is next?

Back in grad school, I had a hallway conversation with @chrispps.bsky.social about residualized variables and what the heck they actually are so maybe it could be figured out how to properly interpret them. Nice to see work like this!

this is great! i had similar thoughts reading the Penn group's bi-factor imaging studies *after* i realized how bifactor mangles the narrow facets. likewise, in work w/ Chris Conway: if you incl all 3 BFI-2 N/NE facets in a simult. INT pred model, ANX & DEP are n.s. why? too colinear. little left.

β€œOne person is an autocratic president of the university for decades” certainly wasn’t a flawless system but it’s clear that β€œadmins hop from job to job scaling the career ladder by filling their CV with β€˜accomplishments’ that are expensive burdens to the schools they leave behind” is even worse.

I am realistic enough to understand the demand-side issues, but I am also old skool about stuff like this and I really wonder how you can have a fully-realized university if you are just continually dropping coverage of significant areas of knowledge like this

Using HiTOP in Research YouTube video by HiTOP

We’ve just published another video on HiTOP that tries to flesh out a bit more how the framework can be helpful in research: youtu.be/q0jOi_Nl1yo

We hope it’s useful, and are keen to hear any feedback

Thanks again so much to @tashtc.bsky.social for all of her hard work creating this video series ✨

As an aside, "Excellence" must be the single-most overused, empty, boilerplate word used in academic bureaucracy and it's typically a stand-in for "We don't know what we want so you should do everything".

Bridging ideas from disparate areas is challenging. This paper has been through the multi-round peer review wringer unsuccessfully for a couple of years at several outlets now, and we are starting to think it may never be officially published.

But we like the ideas here, and maybe you might too..

This let-them-fail approach just grades students on their knowledge of academia's hidden curriculum. And risks perpetuating inequities.

Instead I'd say: spend time in *every* course teaching students to write effectively in that field and give them opportunities for low-stakes practice and feedback
