My recent preprint on cross-kingdom bacteria has just obtained an easily readable HTML version β€” like in journals and on bioRxiv πŸ§ͺ🦠🌾

Now you can read it easily without downloading and decide on was it was worth rejecting by bioRxiv or not

β€˜Dark oxygen’ discovered 4,000 meters below the Pacific Ocean where sunlight has never reachedΒ | Dark oxygen discovered under the Pacific Ocean (Image source: AI-generated) For decades, school textbooks have explained that oxygen on Earth is mainly produced through photosynthesis, a process that depends on sunlight. Plants, algae, and some bacteria use light to turn water and carbon dioxide into oxygen. But a new study of the deep sea has made us wonder if oxygen can also be made without sunlight.

A new post in my research blog features a new controversial paper of mine πŸ§ͺ

It shows how CFTR inhibitory factors (Cif) can transform bacteria into universal cross-kingdom colonizers. However, it was rejected even by bioRxiv - for its simplicity πŸ¦ πŸŒΎβ›”

Stone Age woman was buried like a man, revealing flexible gender roles 7,000 years ago in Hungary A study of 125 skeletons from two Neolithic cemeteries in Hungary has revealed that men and women had clear gender roles β€” but sometimes those roles were fluid.

Gender roles in Neolithic Hungary may have been more flexible than researchers previously expected. 🏺πŸ§ͺ

Cif β€” CFTR inhibitory factor β€” was believed to be just a bacterial enzyme phenocopying cystic fibrosis. My recent research suggests that it might target plants, marine invertebrates, and humans by interfering with oxylipin signalling πŸ§ͺπŸ¦ πŸŒΎπŸšΆβ€β™‚οΈ

Complexity is less than the sum of its parts, not more Patterns are a shorthand for reality

Please guys can we stop calling complex systems "more than the sum of their parts?"

I'm guilty of this word crime myself, but I did my time by writing this post. πŸ§ͺ

I did not mention Neptune, I mentioned an exoplanet of the "sub-Neptune" class; they are not to be confused. However, this exoplanet could really smell like canned corn, while our "domestic" Neptune could smell like rotten eggs due to hydrogen sulfide in the atmosphere.

Dimethyl sulfide from space - a sign of extraterrestrial life, or something else? - The Skeptic In April, astronomers detected dimethyl sulfide on an planet K2-18b, amid speculation that it might be signs of extraterrestrial life

Exoplanet in focus, unexpected gas detected, extraterrestrial life claimed - and then not confirmed. It has already become a tradition.

β€˜Deliberate targeting of vital body parts’: X-rays taken after Iran protests expose extent of catastrophic injuries Exclusive: Expert analysis of images from one hospital suggests severe trauma to the face, chest and genitals was caused by metal birdshot and high-calibre bullets

The pattern of injuries clearly shows that the aim of the regime was not to disperse the crowd, but to disfigure and blind them

A Second Wave of Popular Anger Is Building in Iran The heavy-handed response to protests has deepened people’s hatred of the regime, and Iranians are speaking out.

A new wave of protest is rising in Iran, with mourning families, students and medical workers openly defying the regime, @wsj.com tells

Iranian authorities have made small concessions, such as releasing a protester on bail and issuing motorcycle licenses to women.
