π» New Research - Who welcomes the bear: Evidence for a disconnect between attitudes and acceptability of killing brown bears β‘οΈ buff.ly/d4hqs0t
A study in Iran recommends gender-inclusive outreach and economic diversification for bear conservation
I'm happy to share our new article, published in People and Nature, in collaboration with a great team including @danialnayeri.bsky.social, Alireza Mohammadi, Alistair Bath, and Mohammad Farhadinia, exploring attitudes toward killing brown bears.
πRead Reyhaneβs great summary of our new paper!
Please add me if you donβt mind!
Science friends!
Many of you, alarmed by grant funding cuts that make expensive field ecology research difficult or impossible, have been thinking about what to do instead. Great idea.
Some of you have been saying "I'll just do some social science surveys," without learning how. Bad idea! π§΅π§ͺ
How can #birding be more accessible to people with #disability? See our research on constraints and facilitators!
6/ Bottom line: Managing free-ranging dogs & cats in urban areas is a βwicked problemβ requiring interdisciplinary solutions. Collaboration, education, and humane strategies are critical. #UrbanEcology
5/ Management recommendations: Improve waste management to limit food sources, communicate with pet owners to reduce feeding, and foster community-driven solutions to bridge polarized views. #ConservationSolutions
4/ Alternatives to culling like spaying, waste management, and sheltering were favored. Culling was largely viewed as ineffective for managing FRDs & FRCs. Feeding bans were also seen as ineffective. #Sustainability
3/ Religious beliefs play a key role. Those viewing dogs as βNajisβ (ritually impure) were less likely to feed & more likely to support culling. Yet most respondents opposed culling, except in cases of human attacks or disease. #SocietyAndCulture
2/ We found: 63% fed FRDs, 59% fed FRCsβmostly with food leftovers. Feeding is often driven by compassion, religious beliefs, or fun. Feeding outside neighborhoods is common, raising social & environmental issues.

Free-ranging dogs (FRDs) & cats (FRCs) pose conservation and public health challenges globally. This study explored feeding practices & public attitudes towards managing them in a city in Iran.

Some of my key interests:
-Tackling polarizing issues like invasive species management and clashing values in conservation.
-Examining the cultural and social factors that shape behaviors toward wildlife.
-Using quantitative methods (hello, SEM!) to uncover insights in conservation psychology.
Hi everyone! π Since many of us have migrated here from X, I thought itβd be a great time to introduce myself.
Iβm Danial, a PhD student exploring the human dimensions of wildlife. My research dives into understanding how people interact with wildlife to foster coexistence and address conflicts. πΏπ¦
