A blue background with the DEV profile handle โ@adiatiayuโ. A speech bubble from their profile picture features the blog title โOpen Source Engagement: What's Working Now?โ and quote: โIโve been wondering, why are contributors fading away, and what strategies can we use to keep contributors coming back for the long run?โ.
Are the old rules of open-source engagement no longer working? Ayu Adiati explores why contributor engagement is dropping and opens up a discussion for maintainers and contributors to share what's working now.

I see the Hacktoberfest trend: some contributors only show up for the PR count, then never come back.
I wrote this post because the real journey and growth in open source happen when you stay long after the event is over.

Great work by @huijing.bsky.social, @paulyu.dev, @nickyt.online, and others!
Loved the deep dives into the challenges of migrating a personal blog from Hugo to Astro and how to reclaim your passion for coding.

This marked another milestone in my open source journey! ๐
๐งต For this year's Hacktoberfest, I did something new, something that I've never done before. I made no-code contributions by creating two video tutorials for @MauticCommunity

I was super skeptical of AI and didn't know much about APIs. But my manual OSS tracking was getting nowhere. ๐
So, I tried vibe coding for the first time on vacation and built a fully automated open source portfolio using just my smartphone! ๐

Setting up GitHub CLI on WSL2 can fail at auth despite what the browser says. So here, Ayu teaches you a reliable fix + full โghโ setup on Ubuntu/WSL2. She explains the install, the device-code login workaround, upgrades, uninstall, & how to revoke OAuth access.

When I created my GitHub account a few years ago, the handles that I wanted were taken.
Lately, I have the itch to change it to be the same as my social handles, but I'm afraid if I don't do it right, it will cause trouble bc I'm still actively contributing ๐
I work with Gitpod for the 1st time today. I created a branch, made all changes, added & committed them. Then, my browser crashed. When I opened it again, my working branch was gone! ๐ญ
Does anyone understand why it happened & if there's any way I can find/safe my branch?

Moving our Virtual Coffee Community Docs to Docusaurus is not as straightforward as I thought. ๐
It's mainly bc the structures & contents are intended to be read on GH repo only.
I encountered many errors every time I ran it. But I've learned a lot & I love it! โจ๏ธ๐ฅฐ
I allowed my kid to use my phone to google for DIY tutorials.
She was like, "Mom! Do you know that you're famous??? I googled your name. There are so many pictures & websites about you!"
Then she jumped & gave me the biggest hug in the world. I just couldn't stop smiling. ๐ฅฐ
I'm working with Docusaurus.
I ran `git restore .` more than 10x, and I have 20+ tabs open to debug within almost 5 hours (even though it's not working yet)! ๐คฃ
This is what I missed all this time. The excitement of problem solving and learning something new. โจ๏ธ
I hesitated to publish this post because I'm being (too) honest and vulnerable here. But I finally hit the publish button. ๐ฅน
