Unfortunately, Legacy of Kain: Defiance appears to have been translated using AI LLM once again. I understand their desire to cut costs, but if that's the case, I'd rather have no localization at all.

In fact, since this is a common localization issue, I noticed that many Japanese gamers had previously complained about this recurring problem, which allowed me to quickly identify the cause and find a solution.
The solution is to use different fonts for different localizations. For example, use Noto Sans Japanese for the JP version and Noto Sans Simplified Chinese for the CN version to avoid this issue.
In fact, this is a common issue in localization, and the cause is easily identified: both the Chinese and Japanese versions use a single font setโlikely the Noto CJK fonts. While this font includes all forms of Chinese and Japanese characters, it does not automatically distinguish between them.
I reviewed the Chinese and Japanese localizations of Defiance and found Japanese kanji appearing in the Chinese version and vice versa. Due to the significant differences in fonts used for the two languages, this results in a highly jarring visual effect.

Raina, sorry to reach out on release day. Iโve encountered a major localization issue that may be related to font handling for Asian languages.

Deus Ex was officially released in China in 2001, distributed by โๅไบฌๆฐๅคฉๅฐโ (who brought many Eidos titles to China), but without any translation or localization.
The fan translation of Deus Ex actually began in late 2024 and is scheduled for release this year.๐๐๐
Whether fan translations can become official localizations ultimately depends on the developers. Games like Deus Ex and Vampire: The Masquerade clearly won't get that chance.๐
My words seem to have caused a misunderstanding. We are fan translators and have no affiliation with the official Deus Ex team๐ญ
The deadline is approachingโtime to switch to overtime mode!
However, localizing games that only support European languagesโsuch as Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republicโrequires an enormous amount of work. To my knowledge, It took our technical expert approximately one year to complete the work on KOTOR.
Deus Ex itself has an official Japanese version, so we modified the Japanese font files, replacing thousands of characters with Chinese equivalents and establishing mappings between the original Japanese text and the new Chinese text for conversion.
Since these languages contain more than 256 characters, they cannot be modified using the character tables provided by the game itself. Therefore, new font files must be created and the game program modified to force it to read these files.
To my knowledge, this step is required for localizing all games originally only supporting European languages into other languages such as Chinese, Japanese, and Korean.
However, games typically designed only for European languages will only recognize one byte. Therefore, we must hook the rendering function and modify the game program to force it to recognize three-byte characters.
For instance, in UTF-8 encoding, the character โAโ corresponds to the code 0x41, but the Chinese character โๅโ corresponds to the code (0xE5, 0x95, 0x8A). That's rightโa single Chinese character requires three bytes.
If the developer does not provide multilingual support, for all languages where characters exceed 256 bytes and are defined by multiple encoding bytes, you must hook the game's character rendering function. This forces it to read multi-byte characters instead of single-byte ones.
I see. So if we want to localize Revision, we might need to hook the font rendering function and then use DLL injection to force-replace those English fonts.
I'd like to know if Revision supports characters from other languages, but I suspect it won't differ from the original version.
OMG, where are these texts placed?๐ฑ
Additionally, if you have time, you may need to conduct a thorough investigation. I believe the text in the Revision version has other issues. I believe in the OG, Leo Gold was always referred to as โNSF Terrorist Leader,โ but in the Revision version, his FamiliarName is now set to "Leo Gold".
I never imagined the text for the Spy Drone augmentation was hidden so cleverly.
Unfortunately, the fan-translated version is incompatible with the kentie's exe. However, it's good news that by following kentie's modification method, we've fixed the subtitle display for cutscenes at 1920x1080 resolution. #DeusEx
As far as I know, most of Aspyr's localization work is done using AI/LLM, so I can already foresee that the Deus Ex Remastered release will be a flop.
