"Reporter: Do any of you have a favorite animal?
Child: My favorite one is a gold snake that can move. It has gold eyes, and it has a super-duper tailβ¦
Reporter: Mr. Mamdani, the second question for you.
Mamdani: Yes. Itβs also the golden snake."
Why do I reflexively tell grocery store cashiers to βhave a good weekendβ? Theyβre not enjoying the weekend β theyβre working! Am I just twisting in the knife?
Protest sign from MN that says, βDEARLY BELOVED. WE ARE GATHERED HERE TODAY TODISMANTLE THIS THING CALLED ICE.β with a picture of Prince in the left hand lower corner.
10/10 ICE protest sign
Every social theory undergirding Trumpism has been broken on the steel of Minnesotan resolve. The multiracial community in Minneapolis was supposed to shatter. It did not. It held until Bovino was forced out of the Twin Cities with his long coat between his legs. The secret fear of the morally depraved is that virtue is actually common, and that theyβre the ones who are alone. In Minnesota, all of the ideological cornerstones of MAGA have been proved false at once. Minnesotans, not the armed thugs of ICE and the Border Patrol, are brave. Minnesotans have shown that their community is socially cohesiveβbecause of its diversity and not in spite of it. Minnesotans have found and loved one another in a world atomized by social media, where empty men have tried to fill their lonely soul with lies about their own inherent superiority. Minnesotans have preserved everything worthwhile about βWestern civilization,β while armed brutes try to tear it down by force.
Last week in Minnesota, I watched ordinary people risk their lives to protect their neighbors. In the process, they not only won a significantβthough not finalβvictory against authoritarianism, they proved virtually every MAGA social theory wrong. (gift link) www.theatlantic.com/ideas/2026/0...
New York Times front page with headline "Videos Contradict Federal Accounts of Fatal Shooting."
Update: Times took out the qualifier "appear to."
Screenshots of six newspaper front pages from January 25. Upper left: Washington Post, headline: "Federal agent secured gun from Minn. man before fatal shooting, videos show." Upper middle: New York Times, headline: "Videos Appear to Contradict Federal Accounts of Fatal Shooting." Upper right, Wall Street Journal, headline: Videos Contradict U.S. Account of Minneapolis Shooting. Lower left, CNN, headline: "CNN video analysis sheds new light on killing of Alex Pretti. Lower middle, Economist, headline: "Another horrifying shooting by federal agents in Minneapolis." Lower right, USA Today, headline: Analysis of Minneapolis shooting video shows when agents killed Alex Peretti."
Headline's from today's news publications. A mixed bag, but mostly on the right track, with only The Economist expressing the horror of what happened. (And... Do better, WaPo.)
Jerry O'Connell tweet saying "Love You, Rob. Sincerely." accompanying a photo of a young O'Connell in Stand by Me with his arm around Rob Reiner.
This one broke me.
Screenshot from Garbage Day newsletter: "consumption, before we ever saw it reflected back at us. Gen Z, however, is treating these fuzzy reflections as real. A big chunk of the TikTokers sharing millennial hopecore edits say theyβve been binging the 2012 HBO show Girls and seem to think it actually reflected the time period. But I distinctly remember recoiling in embarrassed horror at its depiction of what was meant to be my life in Greenpoint when I sat down with friends to watch the pilot. βHow dare Lena Dunham walk past Enidβs,β I yelled at the screen. "That's"
Today's @garbageday.email (which is glorious) is about Gen Z's nostalgia for the millennial era. But every generation goes through this. Millennials cringed in horror at their depiction in Girls; Gen Xers cringed the same way at Reality Bites. ("It feels weird to be so marketed to," a friend said.)

YESSSSSSSS THANK YOU FREDDIE FOR BEING THE MAN AND ALSO LETTING ME GO TO BED
NEVER MIND WOOOOOOO
I wanna see Decoy pitch an inning
You know Orel brought his gear with him to the game, JUST in case.
You know, at 10:15pm I felt like eating some cheese and then thought, no, itβs too close to bedtime, better not.
I have regrets and thatβs one of them.
βI love pineapple. Itβs a great, great fruit.β At this point Smoltz and Davis are basically Anthony Michael Hall in Breakfast Club sticking pencils up his nose.
WP Kinsella wrote a novel called The Iowa Baseball Confederacy about a lost-to-time baseball game (against the Cubs!) that went on for 40 days and nights. Thinking of it now for no reason at all.
We're launching a portal to review federal immigration enforcement in New York after yesterdayβs ICE raid on Canal Street.
New Yorkers who were present should submit videos or photos, and we will review and investigate any violations of the law.
Scoop: Trump has started demolishing the White House's East Wing facade to build his ballroom. The president had claimed construction of the $250 million building wouldnβt βinterfereβ with the existing White House structure. /W @ddiamond.bsky.social wapo.st/4hqBNiU
βLupinβ being a TV show and not a movie, of course. Still! I am simply a sucker for a heist.
Have definitely watched too many heist movies, because my immediate reaction to this story was βgo Lupin goβ
I just watched Sneakers for the first time. They don't make movies like this anymore, do they? Taut, funny, well-paced, ... a dream heist movie. The casting is brilliant enough as it is, and then boom, James Earl Jones! Also, is this the funniest Sidney Poitier and David Strathairn have ever been?
Just saw One Battle After Another and it is electrifying. Propulsive, expertly shot and acted, and β surprisingly β often laugh-out-loud funny. It's PTA's best work yet, in my opinion. The trailers (which I found hard to follow) didn't do it justice.
Can someone sit the producers of the Emmys down and explain that we watch for the speeches? And why are they producing the Emmys if they don't know it?
Iβm rewatching The Good Place, and the urge to yell βBortles!β in every single situation is overwhelming.
Thanks for recommending the Tyrus Wong documentary! I watched it last night (with my parents) and it was pretty great.
I've been looking up state mottos, and they're often surprising and delightful.
- Washington: "Al-ki," a Chinook Jargon word meaning "by and by"
- North Carolina: "Esse Quam Videri," Latin for "to be rather than to seem"
- Texas: "Friendship," because "Tejas" is a Caddo Indian word meaning "friend"
