Then again I use Android and browser only so no idea how bad things are on the iOS side.

IMO the best features are:
- you can follow hashtags
- spam and abuse is swiftly dealt with
- no algorithmic feed, you only get what you follow
- friendly people

Everything centralized is the problem not the solution.

It's owned, maintained and developed by people not corporate entities.
