And some people see them as both, and become critics.

I think this story is a really good example for people to look at when it comes to understanding bias at NYT. It's not that the reporter, Dana Rubinstein, says anything outright false. But the framing, word choices, etc., add up to an unprofessional and biased account.
This is true, but also, I think what people don't understand is how informing on kids who are trying out a nickname and a pronoun raises the stakes in way that could drive the inappropriate transitions and regret, the thing we're supposed to be so scared of.
Let me explain.

Reporter seeking freedom of speech in the US arrested for exercising freedom of speech in the US
Pinhead from the film Hellraiser: heβs a white β paper, ghost, white β guy with a face thatβs been sectioned off into little squares by a load of pins sticking out of his face. Heβs wearing a black outfit. The background is dark blue and full of dungeon-y chains and I think heβs got a smoke machine going. Pinhead is baring his very yellow teeth, for reasons that are unclear to me, a person who hasnβt watched Hellraiser.
Getting Botox for my migraines again this morning, a process which always makes me feel a bit like Pinhead
What no one tells you until youβre chronically ill is that having a chronic illness/multiple illnesses is like a full-time job (loads of meetings, paperwork, phone calls, emails, etc.), but unlike most full-time jobs, you pay them instead of the other way round.
For Brits, itβs worth noting that there have already been rumblings about age-gating *Wikipedia*, because it has content that is βinappropriateβ for minors. So itβs hardly hyperbolic to suggest there is a slippery slope. We just havenβt yet stepped fully on to it.
Two figures are debating at either shoulder of what appears to be a skeletal figure. One is a mycelium spirit in prayer; the other, who seems more pressing in the conversation, is a shrouded being. The skull of the central figure is also a portal with ectoplasm and fire surrounding. The darkness of the skeleton face is patterned with city windows and the clothing worn by the figure has inverted lightning. The eye of the storm seen in another painting βghost stormβ is now an untangled viscera surrounding the neck of the central subject.

ββ¦about the 1873 massacre in Colfax, La., where dozens of Black men were murdered by a mob of former Confederates and Ku Klux Klan members.
ChatGPT had deemed it βD.E.I.β Mr. Fox said he agreed. βBecause it focuses on exclusively anti-Black violence, which is a race,β he said.β
Screaming women. Just lots of women, screaming, because it is cathartic and it helps. Scream, scream, scream it all out. (From βGolden Rage: Mother Knows Bestβ)
Happy International Womenβs Day! Please continue to scream.
A man sitting on a big chair, his hands are folded in praying. Four other men are around him, spitting on him. This is a detail from the Speculum humanae salvationis (1471 printed in Utrecht, nowadays the Netherlands). https://data.onb.ac.at/rep/10036309

One of my only breaks from Esoteric Ebb this week was to read DIE: Loaded and I think Iβm starting to get the Tetris effect with dice
The cover of the comic series DIE by Kieron Gillen, Stephanie Hans, and Clayton Cowles. It features a white haired woman in black looking up. Overlaid is a geometric red shape of an unfolded D20.
The title card of the video game Esoteric Ebb, featuring a cleric and goblin fighting a skeleton and a wyvern.
βMetanarratives that will leave you staring at a D20 hard enough someone will ask if youβre okβ starter pack
Just swallowed Esoteric Ebb (all 30+ hours of it) whole, the way a snake swallows an (esoteric) egg. Incredible, incredible game.

Authors:
I've talked around them before, but it you ever get a message to be interviewed by Author Essence, Reader's House, Novelist Post, or Mosaic Digest... mark as spam and ignore.
It's a Ponzi scheme vanity publishing scam, and even if you never give them a cent they'll be annoying forever.
I think the fact that so many white male lefty pundits apparently didn't know what a totenkopf was until the Platner scandal is kinda why we're in this whole mess, politically.
*throwing darts at a wall of random words* Today I will be mad at... TimothΓ©e Chalamet... about... opera.
All these who voted "yes" you have a chance to either contact them to try to convince them that these laws don't work or also vote against them so they don't get re elected
The fight is so neck and neck that a few reps could make a difference
Comic artists often do not realize how cool they are
Reading the 1818 text Frankenstien, and the thing it understands most keenly about the creative process is spending months toiling on a cherished project and when it finally comes to fruition, immediately never wanting to set eyes on it again.
Damn me, but all things are queer
If Timothee Chalamet wants to make being a reverse-snob part of his deal, whatever. Be a child, you know?
But at a time when arts funding and support are so imperiled, it would be nice not to lead with your contempt for wide swaths of the arts during your campaign to have your own art recognized.
Youβre good!
To be vague, my health is a wreck in ways that have required some intense dietary restriction (& resulted in associated issues) and I just canβt imagine doing something like that/this if I didnβt absolutely have to.
Can second this as someone with a *load* of dietary/immune issues right now. I canβt eat the vast majority of restaurant foods (& even frozen foods/ready meals). And itβs never clearer how much food is THE default Social Activity until that happens.
Itβs nice when you have a weird medically-necessary diet & there are more options available to you that werenβt before, but it sucks when the reasoning is βa bunch of people are probably making themselves sick in new ways trying to get healthy.β
