"Visual Media as Political Discredit" will address how memes, AI, news framing, and more are used as misogynistic backlash and tools of authoritarianism...and what to do about it.
Thanks, @levin.bsky.social I've been mostly gone from BSKY for a year; want to step back in.
I can't wait to share It's Not You, It's Media: Decoding What We Watch, Read, Post, Buy, and Create with you all!
1st graphic novel for adults on media literacy, forthcoming from @23rdstbooks.bsky.social!
Hey, yeah, that's me! (Can you DM me your name? I have SDAM so memory is a challenge for me, and placing random non-name handles to actual people is impossible.)
Thanks for this piece!
Sorry I did not see this in Jan -- I have been away from Bsky, but plan to return soon.
"A crucial reminder that, as I've written about for many years, men in these enforcer roles very often have histories of [violence] ... systemic sexism is not seen as a problem or as a priority within media, nor even on the left in general.β @jennpozner.bsky.social

It's one of the best tools we have! (I've taking a lengthy Bsky break but I may come back soon.)
Thanks you! I'll try to get there.
A woman on an airplane with dark red hair is wearing a blue New York Jews For Zohran tee shirt. She has a travel pillow around her neck.
Wearing my @jfrejnyc.bsky.social NY Jews for Zohran tee on βοΈ to Seattle...next to businessman watching Dick Cheney's funeral, then Squawk Box (a financial news w/stock ticker).
I wonder if (not, wait: hope) he thinks I'm trolling him?
So tempted to ask if this flight is him fleeing NYC...
Thanks! Sounds great. (Do you know if any of these places seat outdoors? It's a constant battle to try to stay Covid safe in the colder months -- restaurants sometimes will allow me to put one table outside. Sometimes not.)
I probably don't need pizza while I'm out here (as a native Brooklynite, I have Big Feelings About Pizza), but thanks for the rest of these. I'll check them out.
I'm surprised to see a hotel restaurant getting a nod. I'm used to hotel food being mediocre -- not the case here?
As a NYer, a former Village Voice writer who had my first Media Watch column in the much-missed feminist newspaper, Sojourner:
1) yes;
2) I really, REALLY want an old red Voice newspaper box. Been hunting for years. Not a repro--a real one that proudly weathered snow and rats on the street.
Oh, good, now the robots can talk to each other. And no one has to ever have an actual conversation with their friends, family, or coworkers ever again.
Ha! Reminds me of when I ran media trainings and told activists to imagine that NYT, WaPo, or local paper reported on their cause/work in ideal way -- then, write the headline & lede of that story.
1st group wrote fantasy text as if living in utopia.
I had to clarify: IRL, actual news coverage!
I mean, if cats of Bsky had ceased being cute I'd have major questions.
All hail fellow book nerds!
I'm βοΈ now, was planning to text you tonight! I'd love to see you again this trip. Maybe another seafood dinner? My weekends are spoken for w/my nieces, but I don't leave until Dec 8 so I'll have some weekdays free. (Haven't finalized much yet.)
Staying in a free empty house this time= longer visit.
The Seattle Space Needle through trees and clouds just before dusk. I snapped this picture this time last year.
Seattle-area folks, food recs? Fave restaurants, esp w/outdoor dining or delivery?
Visiting fam in Renton; can cab to Seattle, Bellevue, Redmond, etc
Food I love:
1. Salmon & scallops
2. Freshest sashimi+sushi
3. French
4. Pho
6. Freshest veggies+salads
7. Thai, Italian, American, crepes, brunch
The U.S. Coast Guard will no longer classify the swastika, an emblem of fascism and white supremacy inextricably linked to the murder of millions of Jews and that more than 400,000 U.S. troops died fighting against in World War II, as a hate symbol, according to a new policy that takes effect next month.
Now thatβs a lede.

Hi #Skyfriends! Been ages since I was on here regularly -- but I think I'm ready to come back. I've missed chatting about media, politics, po culture, activism, and comedy w/you.
What's changed on Bsky since Feb? (IβοΈout when endless fascism+RFK+Elon+π§ gave me chronic migraines+nausea. I'm ok now.)

Excellent!! Please feel free to tell her that I'm happy to brainstorm with her even before the graphic novel comes out if she needs support teaching media literacy.
LOVE to hear it! What grades does she teach? This is aimed at adults, w/strong potential for YA/young adult readers.
I'd love to get the book in high school classrooms. (Maaaaybe precocious younger teens?) That's why--even as a native NYer--I limited profanity except for a few impt media quotes.
I'll try to remember! But it's going to be a while before the link is available. (Never fear, I'll be plastering it everywhere once it's ready.)
I really hope it can be useful to as many people as possible. I truly believe we wouldn't be enduring fascism if we were a media literate nation.

Woman in a No Means no Cuomo t and a young man with hair in braids whoβs holding up a Zohran flyer
πstory from @jennpozner.bsky.social that shows the value of volunteering for Zohran today. She met a young man who was vaguely aware of the election but didnβt plan to vote. His mom runs a food bank & he spoke re the value of serving the community. They talked for 15 minutes! Heβs voting Zohran!
Again for the night owls: HEY NYC, Do you like to sing? Want to elect @zohrankmamdani.bsky.social? Get in touch ASAP!
Seeking a few more folks to sing this πfunny anti-Cuomo/pro-Zohran parody song during a poll site visibility shift in Ditmas Park, Brooklyn.
