I'm so sad to hear through the grapevine about Ralph's passing. He was the chair when I was hired at Wash U and a truly upstanding person.
I interviewed him at one point about what he thought went into making a great leader, and I need to dig those notes up!

Graph of award probability of R35 and R01 from NIH factbook as a function of review rank percentile. As is apparent, 2025 is a significant departure, with lower award probabilities at all scores <40 and significant departures from norm, where even being in the top 10% is no longer a nearly certain indicator of success. Data source: https://report.nih.gov/nihdatabook/report/302
The data is in: the NIH goalposts have shifted.
What were once almost certain fundable scores have become coin flips and what used to be likely grants have become aspirational, leading to fewer awards.
Another manifestation of how HHS policies have led to fewer awards and less science.

Of the three seasons during which I guide tours in Churchill, #aurora season is by far of the most stressful, because we have no control over what people are coming up to see. Tonightβs show was a big relief and a huge excitement for my guests. Now I can sleep. π

MY DREAM JOB I am going to talk about my dream job. When I was a child I wanted to be a journalist but I changed my mind and now I would like to work as a scientist, but it is very difficult. Firstly, I have to study a lot because I must have very good marks for study at iversity Biotechnology, because there are not many seats in Spain. Even if I could study it, it would be difficult to work as a scientist because it is not a common job. In conclusion, I will try to get my dream job, but I know it will be difficult.
Diving into my old hard drive, I found this English homework from when I was 17. Village girl from Spain writing about her dream job. A few thoughts.π§΅π
You can be a journalist on the side so you cover multiple dreams. ππ·
