Ralph S. Quatrano, former dean of Engineering, 84 Celebration of life to be held May 9 in Whitaker Hall at WashU

I'm so sad to hear through the grapevine about Ralph's passing. He was the chair when I was hired at Wash U and a truly upstanding person.

I interviewed him at one point about what he thought went into making a great leader, and I need to dig those notes up!

This is a pro-fun account.

There’s a lot going on, times are hard and they aren’t going to get better any time soon.

Celebrate your half birthday.Make up holidays.Find reasons to gather, party and fellowship.Find your people.Spend time with family and friends. Ignore anyone in opposition to fun.

Here's the latest variant picture for Canada, to mid-February.

XFG.* "Stratus" remained dominant, but fell sharply to finish at 50% frequency.

NB.1.8.1 "Nimbus" grew strongly to 43%.

Graph of award probability of R35 and R01 from NIH factbook as a function of review rank percentile. As is apparent, 2025 is a significant departure, with lower award probabilities at all scores <40 and significant departures from norm, where even being in the top 10% is no longer a nearly certain indicator of success.

The data is in: the NIH goalposts have shifted.

What were once almost certain fundable scores have become coin flips and what used to be likely grants have become aspirational, leading to fewer awards.

Another manifestation of how HHS policies have led to fewer awards and less science.

Of the three seasons during which I guide tours in Churchill, #aurora season is by far of the most stressful, because we have no control over what people are coming up to see. Tonight’s show was a big relief and a huge excitement for my guests. Now I can sleep. 😊

MY DREAM JOB
I am going to talk about my dream job. When I was a child I wanted to be a journalist but I changed my mind and now I would like to work as a scientist, but it is very difficult.
Firstly, I have to study a lot because I must have very good marks for study at iversity Biotechnology, because there are not many seats in Spain. Even if I could study it, it would be difficult to work as a scientist because it is not a common job.
In conclusion, I will try to get my dream job, but I know it will be difficult.
