Check our review in GBE about SMC-based methods! I wish I had a review like this when I started my PhD
Our new paper is out in PNAS!
We analyzed 125 high-coverage whole genomes from five Sudanese ethnolinguistic groups, to understand the evolutionary and demographic history of the region.

The 2026 EMBL symposium 'Reconstructing the human past using ancient and modern genomics' is live with a fantastic invited speaker lineup!
Abstract deadline 9 June. If work is ongoing, plan for Heidelberg in Septemberπ.
Organised by Maanasa Raghavan, @matejahajdi.bsky.social, Choongwon Jeong & me.
Take a look at my first preprint as a first author!
We analyse the effect of population structure in SMC methods and find two systematic biases that have indeed extra information about the population! We model the nature of these biases and find a link with the isolation of the population and Fst.
Excited to share our new preprintπ
It's the first human WGS study in Sudan. We uncover one of the strongest selection signals to date, pointing to post-admixture adaptation to malaria in Copts. Huge thanks to all co-authors. @aidaandres.bsky.social @jgarcia-cal.bsky.social @ebosch1972.bsky.social
That somehow truly happened 1 month ago. #SMBE2025 has been amazing and being part of the Excellence Graduate Awarded is nothing less than a dream come true
So grateful for this incredible opportunity!!!

They did it! They opened the path to overcome the assumptions the of SMC-based coalescent with LLMs. This new era is just right here!

Seeing how every effort has now materialized into lessons and teachings that truly benefit @ibe-barcelona.bsky.social scientists of all generations has been immeasurable. Thank you, @xavimartiperez.bsky.social, for co-leading this project.
Excited for our publication on how the geographic scale of a sample affects the discovery of rare, deleterious variants to be out this week. With a mix of theory, simulation, and data analysis, we show when samples are narrow vs broad, the number of variants discovered and their frequencies change
Very happy to have been part of this project. Go check this dive on SMC-based models!

Today, AnΓs del Mono is enjoyed around the world, and the statue has become a symbol of Badalona. What began as a joke about Darwin now stands as a quiet tribute to one of scienceβs greatest minds.
Yesterdayβs fools may lay the groundwork for tomorrowβs truths.
When AnΓs del Mono began production in the late 1800s, The Origin of Species was still controversial. The founders may have leaned into this, turning mocking into marketing strategy by putting a (drunk) monkey with Darwinβs face on the label.
The statue represents the logo of AnΓs del Mono, an emblematic local aniseed liqueur brand founded in 1870.
In my hometown, Badalona, there's a bronze statue of a monkey holding a bottle of anise liqueur. It's not just any monkeyβit bears a striking resemblance to Charles Darwin!
Feeling truly honored and grateful to be recognized by @official-smbe.bsky.social with this award! Looking forward to see you all in #SMBE2025 in Beijing!
