Is it any wonder in "What fictional world would you love to live in?" lists, pokemon FREQUENTLY makes the top 3s? If not top 5 or top 10? I haven't played it yet, but I'm willing to bet Pokopia not only captures that optimistic, solarpunk essence to the T, but the game is BUILT on it.
And they're still shown as a progressive, advanced world because of it - entertainment is inclusive for both humans AND pokemon, no shortage of food and things to try. It's all shown as an optimistic, beautiful - but not flawless - place to live.
living WITH the land instead of..... mindlessly consuming resources all to make a chart increase, green, clean energy projects are everywhere to not mess with local pokemon habitats, "antagonistic teams" need only a fire breathing dragon pointed at them or disarming them to get them to stand down.
I didn't like Sword and shield, but the idea of competitive battling and the pokemon being treated as a sport was really well done. You can just imagine top notch medical staff on standby in leon's matches. People's bonds & connections with each other and their pokemon are emphasized,
A part of me wonders if a lot of the praise is bc this is the closest they've come to a gameplay experience that lets you *live* in the pokemon world. Think about it, for almost 25 years now, the franchise has distanced itself from "gotta catch 'em all" in favor of people & pokemon living together.

It's easy to take for granted if all you've ever known is BFD being the "naughty" game with diarrhea and piss, but having followed it since E3 1997 (as Conker's Quest) and the character's debut in Diddy Kong Racing, it's still surreal that this even happened...
I would imagine the console being less than a year old has something to do with that, but 90% chance I'm wrong.

-There was never a point in S/V that my switch looked like it DIDN'T want to blow up, but paldea captured that modern solarpunky pokemon vibe of "Adventuring with your friends and partner pokemon" PERFECTLY.
The main games have been ROUGH to want to enjoy lately, but I still enjoy a good spinoff and the other pokemon media.

Even if this is only the reveal, They’ve only done dlc and one spinoff…ish game since S/V. Should be more than enough time to make a game that elicits: “hey! This is pretty good! $70 is still crazy, but still!”

Hasn't she made it abundantly clear the series WILL end at ep 9? Still either way, all the more excuse to move on if this is how the fan dumb is gonna be. Shows can't exist without support, but that doesn't mean fans call the shots.
