it turns out that white people who religiously self-flagellate (like literally whipping themselves) and claim that they're one of the most powerful necromancers in the city are fascinating on the surface and deeply boring once you get them talking. and they WILL talk, don't you worry.

once you learn that communicating w/ kids just means talking to them like they're People who don't know as much as you do yet, but probably each know a few things you have zero experience with, it gets a lot easier to support kids! even just in situations where you're a volunteer and they're a guest
one of the best parts of volunteering at the aquarium was learning that if i have a vague script i can talk to ANYONE. for AT LEAST 15 minutes. and they will have fun talking to me. and i will have fun talking to them. WILD....

but it makes me curious about my "non-survivor" buds who won't interact with art that has rape in it.
will they avoid my work once it's finished?
will they make an exception?
if so, will they be uncomfortable with my work? or with me?
some good convos could surface from any of those reactions lol
before i watch things, i look up "does an animal die" & "is there sexual assault" lol
those are the 2 things i need to know going into a story, especially if i'm watching with other people. i also slap content warnings into the very beginnings of all my story scripts so i don't forget any triggers
i used to be triggered by even just the WORD "rape," and the friends who knew me during that time might be trying to protect me by acting like rape scenes are inherently excessive & gross.
which leaves me in an awkward position. i write them into my projects and discuss them openly online & in art.
i know people who are survivors who can't interact w/ rape scenes, but they're usually less... scared(?) of encountering rape scenes.
ppl i know who aren't survivors seem to have developed this kind of contact anxiety thru knowing me; afraid of witnessing art of horrific shit that i've experienced.
it's odd bc these folks know i'm a survivor of abuse, but probably aren't aware of my kinks, or what kind of art i'm making
it always sounds like they're reassuring me that they'd never support or even interact with art that has rape scenes, and also that there's a certain guilt involved if they do
i've had several convos recently like: "i won't watch [movie] bc i heard there's a long, gratuitous rape scene"
i get it, and i don't blame them, but often i look into the movie and it's neither long, nor necessarily "gratuitous." i can only assume all rape scenes are gratuitous to some folks.
