Spoke at La antesala de Babel @ Comillas today on “The Translation of the Future: Language Engineering, LangOps & AI”.
Loved the energy in the room. I saw students shifting from scepticism to curiosity about language tech. The future of language engineers is looking bright!
Excited to speak next week at Universidad Comillas in Madrid on the (not-so-distant) future of translation, LangOps, and AI.
My goals:
- What should we do to stay ahead (or, at least, keep up the pace) of technological progress?
- How to do this with a human-centered perspective?
Localisation Guest Talks – Day 4
We closed the series with Róisín Twomey, Content Program Manager at Microsoft (Packaging Team), who showed us what gets localised—from hardware to UX—and what can vs cannot go wrong.

Last week I gave a 5h session at Universidad Complutense de Madrid on MT & AI-driven translation tools.
Goal? Show that Python isn’t the enemy — it’s a superpower.
We played with Whisper, SeamlessM4T, Groq API & stats in Colab.
Outcome? A few more language engineers in the making!

Yesterday, we welcomed Estefanía Carmona-Fernández, Localisation PM at Spotify, for a session on career paths in l10n, how to navigate the industry, from vendor to buyer roles, and gave our students a real-world perspective on global project management.
Being in Dublin—Europe’s Silicon Valley—gives our students incredible access to industry experts!
Kicking off our guest talk series, we had Mario Pluzny (Localisation Program Manager at Personio, ex-Twitter) sharing his career journey and insights into localisation & globalisation.
This week, I had the pleasure of visiting Universidad de Valladolid to give a workshop on AI for research & professional tasks and an invited talk at the CITTAC series on human-centered machine translation & language engineering.
Excited to be heading to Soria (Universidad de Valladolid) next week.
I’ll be talking about human-centered, augmented machine translation — and whether it’s a utopia or actually a feasible way forward for language technologies.
Hopefully, I'll have the chance to try those famous "torreznos" 🤩
