Redirecting
Another promising finding for 5HT4R agonism! This study found that in participants with previous episodes of depression, 5-HT4R agonist, prucalopride, had pro-cognitive effects (learning, memory & attention).

Ultraprocessed Food Consumption and Behavioral Outcomes in Canadian Children
This cohort study examines the associations between intake of ultraprocessed foods at age 3 years and behavioral outcomes at age 5 years among children in Canada.
Food is more than fuel for growing bodies, it may shape developing minds. Higher ultraprocessed food intake in preschool years was associated with more behavioral and emotional symptoms in early childhood.

The Neuroepithelial Landscape of Enterochromaffin Cells Varies Across Gastrointestinal Location
You have to enable JavaScript in your browser's settings in order to use the eReader.
This cool new paper reports an important characterization of how enteroendocrine cells in the gut are positioned relative to sensory neurons. Not surprisingly, there are significant regional differences along the GI tract!

Properties and functions of transcriptionally distinct enteric neurons
The influence of the nervous system on the intestine is carried out by a combination of enteric, sensory, and autonomic innervation. However, disambigβ¦
This study maps distinct enteric neuron subtypes and shows how each shapes key intestinal functions, from fecal output to feeding.
A big step forward in understanding gutβbrain neural circuits.

A gut sense for a microbial pattern regulates feeding - Nature
A study reveals a gutβbrain sensory pathway through which the microbial component flagellin activates neuropod cells in the colon to signal the brain and reduce feeding in mice.
New research reveals that the gut can sense microbial flagellin via TLR5-expressing neuropod cells, triggering PYY release & reducing feeding through a gutβbrain neural circuitβindependent of microbiota or immune cues.

Engrafted nitrergic neurons derived from hPSCs improve gut dysmotility in mice - Nature
A study presents a strategy based on human pluripotent stem cells for treating neurodegenerative disorders of the gastrointestinal tract.
The Fattahi Lab successfully transplanted hPSCβderived nitrergic enteric neurons into NOβneuronβdeficient mice, restoring gut motility, and created scalable 2D/3D human ENS models to support drug discovery and cellβtherapy approaches for enteric neuropathies.
