Delay CO2 price on gas and fuel past 2027, Czechia-led alliance urges For transport fuels like diesel and petrol, increasing the price at the pump “is even more socially sensitive,” reads a document from Czechia's Petr Hladik (EPP).

With the imminent expansion of the emissions trading scheme, there are calls in the #EU for a postponement of #ETS2. The Czechia took the initiative at the ENVI Council 🇨🇿. It calls for postponing ETS2 until 2028 and "ensuring stability" of the emissions market.

📣 The position document of the EPP was adopted following the initiative of the Czech Republic 🇨🇿, Italy 🇮🇹 and other countries, who at the level of Council of the EU called for a reduction in demands on the European automotive industry.

🔑 The EPP is therefore proposing "temporary relief measures", such as allowing banking and accounting of parts of sales, assessing compliance based on a three-year average or temporarily adjusting the calculation method for penalties to take into account cars produced and not only cars registered.

💨 Starting in January 2025 - just a few days from now - stricter emission limits for car fleets will apply. According to the EPP, due to low sales of electric cars, manufacturers are now at risk of not being able to meet the mandated emission reductions from 2025, which could lead to heavy fines.

🔋 In the opinion of the EPP's MEPs, hybrids should have an exception from the approved legislation after 2035. (Again, this has its limits – according to an earlier report by the European Court of Auditors ⚖️, hybrids are not much "greener" than conventional cars in the field.)

🚗 The fraction's document states that the EU's ban on the sale of new CO2-emitting cars, set for 2035, "should be reversed" to allow the sale of cars with internal combustion engines that run on biofuels and other alternative fuels after that date.
