Daylight savings time is stressful for the brain - every year, a transient risk of accidents and illness. We should consider doing away with it.
Put this neuroscientist in Congress and weโll take it up.

Some highlights of womenโs contribution in science.
Of note:
Kizzmekia Corbett was the scientific lead of the team that developed the Moderna COVID-19 mRNA vaccine.

Kudos to @nature.com for this article highlighting women supporting other women. I opened it thinking it would be a male cast of award winners highlighting women ๐ซฃ. Happy to be wrong!

For #InternationalWomensDay Iโm sharing my ongoing series of women in science through history. Iโm now at 79.
Hereโs to the day a scientistโs sex is no longer remarkable in any field.
Since last year I have added these 12 #linocut prints.

Always remember, he was hired to RUIN the NIH, not run it.
More than 2000 demonstrators gathered on the National Mall yesterday for a rally organized by the advocacy group Stand Up for Science. Speakers criticized Trump regime policies & called for the ouster of RFKjr๐
Every gay person you know, they were a child once. At some point in that childhood, they found out what homosexuality was.
You can't stop either of these things happening and I don't know what you hope to achieve by intentionally making these things difficult, confusing and lonely.

Happy International Women's Day to everyone, but especially trans women.
Good news today: @standupforscience.bsky.social is organizing rallies for science. ๐ช
Bad news:
Funded science is way down.
This is why I said wks ago the budget bill was โbad because it doesnโt go far enough.โ How the science agencies are governed matters!!! This is killing labs. ๐งช
Graph of award probability of R35 and R01 from NIH factbook as a function of review rank percentile. As is apparent, 2025 is a significant departure, with lower award probabilities at all scores <40 and significant departures from norm, where even being in the top 10% is no longer a nearly certain indicator of success. Data source: https://report.nih.gov/nihdatabook/report/302
The data is in: the NIH goalposts have shifted.
What were once almost certain fundable scores have become coin flips and what used to be likely grants have become aspirational, leading to fewer awards.
Another manifestation of how HHS policies have led to fewer awards and less science.

a) what program did the authors use to make the original (left) figure in the paper? Wild guess, ChatGPT
b) how such high school science level of disgrace pass peer review in @nature.com?

...the money you pay society journals to publish at least partially goes into conference costs, fellowships, workshops, seminar series, community projects like Plantae, preLights, etc.
These are two strange arguments. How are society journals not the clearly better option here?

Iโm still in disbelief that Capitol Police and a Republican senator broke the arm of a Marine in full dress uniform because he was voicing opposition to sending troops to Iran. Horrifying.
With this war on Iran costing $1B per day, we are now at 4$B, an amount that would fund 3,200 five year NIH biomedical research grants.
An announcement that the Senate voted to reauthroize the SBIR/STTR program.
The Senate has (finally) voted to reauthorize the small business SBIR/STTR program.
Not reauthorized yet, but this was likely the biggest hurdle.
Friends in central NJ, come out this lovely weekend to help me qualify for the ballot! Send an educator and scientist to Congress!

Richmond, Va.ย โย Today, the Supreme Court of Virginiaย confirmedย that the April 21 redistricting referendum will move forward as planned, ensuring that Virginia voters โ not politicians โ will have the final say. The decision comes as Donald Trump and Republican legislatures in states like Texas and Florida pursue aggressive mid-decade redistricting efforts designed to lock in control of Congress before voters can weigh in. While politicians elsewhere redraw maps behind closed doors, Virginia is putting the question directly to the people. โToday is a victory not just for Virginia voters, but for the principle that voters should decide the rules of our democracy,โย said Virginians for Fair Elections spokesman Dan Gottlieb.ย โAt a moment when Trump and MAGA Republicans across the country are attempting to rig the midterms by manipulating district lines, Virginia is doing the opposite โ giving voters the chance to directly respond. The Court has made clear that the April 21 election will proceed and voters will decide.โ After losing before the Virginia Supreme Court once already, Republicans filed repeat lawsuits in new venues in an attempt to delay and confuse voters. Todayโs action confirms what has been clear from the start: the election proceeds, early voting begins March 6, and the final decision rests with Virginians. Early voting begins March 6. Election Day is April 21. The Vote YES campaign will continue full speed ahead with paid media statewide, grassroots organizing, and a growing coalition mobilizing voters across the Commonwealth.
