A major storyline would have had Inara captured by Reavers, and the crew having to go rescue her, only to find she used some sort of drug that causes anyone who was sexually assaulting her to die, and the entire crew of Reavers is dead now due to assaulting her.

A lot of what we know kind of makes you feel like they were already running low on ideas and were going to burn through the rest of what they had in the tank pretty fast. Ideas that seem a little too familiar. But then you have... the Inara thing.
If you were deep enough into FireFly fandom back in the day you read the unfilmed scripts and dug into all the information about what would have happened in future stories, and know that it was very lucky the show got canceled exactly when it did and ended with the movie instead. Let it rest now.
