I am literally at an NCAR-hosted, NCAR-led meeting where the future of U. S. radar meteorology - one of our most lifesaving enterprises - is being articulated by 180+ diverse participants. NSF NCAR is the only institution capable of convening our community so effectively.

"Something ineffable happens when you write down a thought:

You think something you did not know you could or would think and it leads you to another though. The process of writing itself leads to previously unthought thoughts [and] crystallizes half-formulated or unformulated thoughts"
- Lynn Hunt

Ask anything: When will we have a cover reveal?

Answer: Soon!

Yeah, I know what you mean. Under normal circumstances I'd say a company would never shear its own profits to push a tool, but in this case it might bring large financial incentives from the AI firms. The tail is wagging the dog like a flywheel.

Seems like that's definitely coming, the enforced usage. Institutions are pushing this harder than anything I've ever seen, because of how much is at stake for the billions they've invested. Actual wide-scale demand is lackluster or nonexistent, so they'll compel usage.

That's a great point. ESPN will do nearly anything during an MLB broadcast to distract you from the baseball game. Interviews, juggling, fart contests.

With chaser streaming, stop signs and other traffic regulations seem incidental, too.

I judge the importance of a severe weather event by how many names I recognize on Spotter Network.

The practical advice I would give is: get to the end of the damn thing, whatever it is. Even if it’s provisional and stupid, even if you know that’s not the right second half of the novel, it’s important to find a way to zoom out enough to see it holistically so that you can figure out what it needs. The sooner you get to some kind of end, the sooner you’ll realize that this bookβ€”even if it’s Infinite Jestβ€”isn’t going to do everything you want it to do, or say everything you want to say. And that realization will hopefully help get it to the best version of itself it can be. Some kind of deeper meaning, for me, so often comes in revision, or later. It’s rare that a book says what I thought it was going to say.

I like that Trump will say some garbled sentence like, β€œThe war against the very bad, no class Agrabah is now over until soon and with tears in her eyes, Bianca Jagger thanked me in Studio 54” and serious people act as if he had some sort of coherent thought that he’ll remember tomorrow

man, i click on lots of stuff, new and old, cool and cringe and everything in between. lots of those clicks are inessential and some are good but boy howdy i was not prepared for this performance of 'these days' to hit me between the eyes like a brick

I get yelled at for saying this but for many hundreds of years people went to university not to get diplomas or be employable but because immersion in the humanities was considered foundational to a good life, and school must return to its original purpose: the joy of learning.

Why are so many people logged into Spotter Network in North Texas right now? Did they run out of gas on the way back from Tulsa last night?

All the old Twitter dreams of Orange behind bars will finally come true when Paxton nails him with the obscure Texas statute against β€œnoxious or obnoxious odors” in an elevator.

05.03.2026 03:19 πŸ‘ 0 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 0 πŸ“Œ 0

Paxton won't drop out by the way. He's a man on the run.

He has to be a US senator for the same reason Orange can't risk not being president.

05.03.2026 01:10 πŸ‘ 3 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 0 πŸ“Œ 0

Orange says whoever he does not endorse between Paxton and Cornyn should drop out of the runoff.

He's not going to ask a standing US Senator to drop out.

Somebody told him Talarico would beat Paxton.

I agree with this. If it's Cornyn, swing voters/independents (whatever that means) which Talarico needs will stay with R or stay home.

If Paxton is on the ballot, maybe 25% of those Indies vote for Talarico and maybe 15% of regular Rs stay home out of disgust. That's his path. It's narrow.
