Mitochondria-Lysosome Crosstalk Shapes Metabolic Transition in Neonatal Enterocytes
Gonzalo Herranz, et al. 2025 bioRxiv 2025.09.09.674148; doi: doi.org/10.1101/2025...
Childhood malnutrition remains a major global health challenge. Our work reveals how organelle crosstalk in neonatal gut cells safeguards nutrition and development — and how its failure resembles Kwashiorkor.

🚨 New paper out!
Neonatal enterocytes rely on autophagy & mitophagy to sustain nutrient absorption. Our study demonstrates that the mitochondria–lysosome axis controls the weaning transition and may contribute to childhood malnutrition.

Graphical model showing the effect of CASM autophagy in lumen resolution of epithelial tubes.
🧪 Canonical autophagy isn’t enough! In our new study, only CASM can coordinate the membrane remodeling needed to build a single lumen in tubes. Read how CASM drives endocytic recycling to drive morphogenesis www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...

ATG16L1 KO H1-human Neural Tube organoids fail to resolve ML at day 5 of development. Cells were stained for actin (red) and nuclei (blue). Dotted lines indicate the lumens.
🚨 New paper out! We reveal that noncanonical autophagy (CASM) is a critical driver of epithelial lumen formation. CASM regulates endocytic recycling and membrane remodeling—without it, cells can’t resolve into a single lumen.
