The covers of The Dark Between the Trees by Fiona Barnett and The Everlasting by Alix E. Harrow

The covers of The Dark Between the Trees by Fiona Barnett and The Everlasting by Alix E. Harrow

I'm reading 2 library books to a deadline, switching between the ebook & the audiobook, depending on whether my hands are busy or not. Curiously, certain landscapes and devices appear in both works, so that the stories are starting to feel as if they inhabit a shared world. Enjoying both so far!🪐📚💙

Grammarly Is Facing a Class Action Lawsuit Over Its AI ‘Expert Review’ Feature The feature, which Grammarly shut down Wednesday, presented editing suggestions as if they came from established authors and academics—without their consent.

I'm suing Grammarly over its paid AI feature that presented editing suggestions as if they came from me - and many other writers and journalists - without consent.

State law requires consent before someone's name can be used for commercial purposes.

Grammarly is using people's names and likenesses to dispense "writing advice" in their new "expert review" feature without permission from the people.

And apparently it's not even good advice. 😭

Zenodot — Find book translations across languages Discover book translations across languages. A documentary tool for readers worldwide.

I spent 4 months trying to answer a simple question: has this book been translated into my language?
Turns out no one tracks this. Not ISBN registries. Not Amazon. Not Google. Not libraries.
So I built a tool that crosses four databases to piece it together.

Are you looking for a freelance romance editor? I have more than 15 years of in-house experience (at Carina Press/Carina Adores/Harlequin) and I’d love to work with you! Now booking devs and assessments for March/early April—after that, the next available spot is July. DM with questions!

All hands on deck, folks. This will effectively eliminate all books by queer authors and about queer lives, even books with secondary characters, books where the author or a character uses they/them pronouns. This bill will erase identities and harm kids. And it won't stop at public schools.

Thank you!

I know I can say "Don't be terrified," but it's a totally valid feeling. You're inviting someone in to take a critical eye to something you've poured yourself into. Everyone responds differently. Due to to the depth of the report/comments, it can be a lot to take in, and the emotions that come with it can be big/take time to process. Just know that when I come at this, it is from a place of curiosity, a love of stories, and wanting to help you/the story to grow—never, ever with judgement.

I recommend that writers find another project to work on and distract themselves with while I have their manuscript, as it can help with some of the antsy feelings. :)

Gentle words for the author of my next developmental editing project, and a gentle reminder for anyone hiring a book editor.

This is a process that requires trust and vulnerability. It can be hard. But the right person will tell you what you need to know. 💜

Bulbophyllum purpureorhachis, a plant in the orchid family with a feather-shapped, leathery, wine-red stem that twists as it grows. It has a row of tiny button-like flowers in the same colour that seem to march up the middle of each side of the stem. Delightfully weird.

I just love visiting the botanical gardens in winter. The smell of soil and the tropical air in my lungs are so restorative! #WinterHacks #Botany #Plants

This is delightful.

Also, for readers of An Apprentice to Elves and related books by @pennyvixen.bsky.social and me, there's an Aelfgifu in the third act. :D

(I start having to look up vocabulary in the 1200s but apparently the Anglo-Saxon course I took 35 years ago has stuck, a little.)

Hey, as a librarian I need to tell you:

Our funding depends on usage.

So go ahead and check out that book even if you don't think you'll finish it. No one will know. Check out that DVD even though you might not like it. Get ambitious in your quest for knowledge.
