Social media graphic with statement from Caroline Russell AM on Vision Zero Action Plan 2 with pale green background and a strip across the top showing a diverse group of people walking, wheeling, riding a bike and using a walking stick:

“Collisions, never ‘accidents’, happen daily. They happen when people make mistakes. Whoever slips up, whether it’s a tired child scooting home or a weary person at the wheel of a car or lorry, the price should not be death or life-changing injury. I’m glad to see the Mayor and his teams understand that to achieve Vision Zero we need to create city streets where no one is harmed when, inevitably, mistakes are made.

“Too often there has been a culture on our roads where speeding, distraction and risky driving are treated as acceptable, when in reality they can have devastating consequences. It’s encouraging to see VZAP2 clearly challenge that way of thinking and recognise that changing the culture around driving has to be part of the solution.

“I love the new ideas for ‘hospital zones’ and ‘evening streets’ building on the success of School Streets to reduce road risk and improve air quality. I’m pleased to see that side road zebras, reminding drivers to give way to people crossing, will also be piloted.

“VZAP2 emphasises partnership working between TfL, the Met and the boroughs not only to create safer more inclusive streets, but also to provide support for bereaved families and crash survivors through effective collision investigation along with routine challenge of ‘fatal four’ offences: speeding, driving under the influence of drink or drugs, not wearing a seatbelt, and using a mobile phone.

“The Mayor's VZAP2 Plan has set out clear actions and targets, and what matters most now for Londoners is delivery. I will continue my work on the Assembly to scrutinise his progress closely and ensure that every policy set out is followed through and fully implemented so we can end the trauma of road harm in our city.”

So good that the Mayor’s Vision Zero Action Plan 2 is finally out – with strong recommendations on culture shift and reducing danger.

What matters now is delivery. I’ll keep pushing at City Hall to make sure TfL gets on with urgency making London’s streets safer for everyone. 🧵[1/7]

The Major Local Election That France’s Far Right Might Just Win A year before presidential elections, the National Rally has a chance of capturing Marseille, a historic hub of immigration.

My report on Marseille's upcoming local elections for @foreignpolicy.com. I explain why the far-right has an outside shot at victory in this longtime hub for immigrants that leans leftward. foreignpolicy.com/2026/03/11/f...

Rather than cancelling the fuel duty increase, why not restore the £2 bus fare cap, with even cheaper fares on electric buses?

I voted against the Courts and Tribunal Bill last night.

Restricting jury trials is not what victims are asking for.

They want changes that are backed by evidence and will drive genuine improvements to the justice system.

Today we remember the victims of the 2011 earthquake, tsunami and nuclear accident at Fukushima. 15 years on from the disaster, it's important to remember that nuclear power is an incredibly dangerous form of energy generation and is directly linked to nuclear weapons production.

I just voted against the Government’s plans to abolish juries in huge numbers of criminal trials.

The right to be tried by your peers is a cornerstone of our justice system.

Scrapping jury trials is not the answer to the huge backlog in our courts - and wasn’t in the manifesto.

Absolute nonsense from David Lammy on removing rights to trial by jury. He's trying to persuade us that his reactionary plans are 'progressive'. No chance. Why vote Labour when this sort of policy betrays us and our heritage of civil liberties?

It is part of a pattern. No mandate, no democracy. More authoritarianism, more injustice, more racism. Step by step, closer to fascism.

I'd just about buy the argument that Labour is planning to end the right to jury trials because of financial constraints, although I wouldn't support the measure even then. But to dress this policy up as somehow progressive is simply laughable.

Air pollution in London and the Southeast is extremely high right now which can harm kids and those with respiratory conditions such as asthma. Staying away from big roads that are extra polluted already (and ideally avoid adding more car or burning pollution). uk-air.defra.gov.uk/forecasting/

This article was amended on 5 March 2026. An earlier version said low-skilled workers would “receive immediate access to welfare and social housing” if Labour did not make them wait longer to apply for settlement. In fact, settlement status only gives people the eligibility to apply for welfare and social housing, it does not give them instant or automatic access to such benefits. This has been clarified.

Guardian has now [after my complaint] corrected Mahmood's deliberate & incendiary false claim settlement gives immigrants "immediate access to welfare and social housing".

Good for Gdn but embarrassing/shameful that Home Secretary deliberately misled the public for political gain like this.

Yvette Cooper repeated in parliament yesterday that Iran must “never” be able to acquire nuclear weapons.

Yet when the government is asked about Israel’s actual nuclear arms, it defends Israel by refusing to acknowledge them.

Sort of fascinating to wonder: what *would* it take for Keir Starmer to actually take a proper interest in what goes out under his name and in meaningfully engaging with Labour MPs?
