Dear Premier Houston and Minister Ritcey,
The Canadian Children’s Book Centre is a national charity whose mission is to ensure Canadian children’s books are discovered, read, and celebrated—including the incredible authors, illustrators, publishers, and stories that come out of Nova Scotia. We urge you to immediately reverse your decision to eliminate the $700,000 fund that helps local publishers create books by local authors.
Children all across Canada learn about NS culture, people, geography, and spirit though the books that are published each year in NS. The David Booth Children’s and Youth Poetry Award has had 12 finalists – 4 of those , are books published by NS’s Nimbus Publishing. With 73 submissions from across the country, you can clearly see the quality of publishing that comes out of NS.
This decision does a great disservice to Nova Scotia’s book creators and to building an engaged and literate citizenship and undermines both your culture and economy.
On behalf of Canada’s children and children’s book community, please reverse this decision.
Best regards,
Stephanie

One new title, “The Spaghetti Word Race”, has already been snapped up by a British and an American publisher.
