Yes, hello, is that God? Yeah, hi. I have a complaint. You gave me this brain that’s designed for finding berries and avoiding lions and now people are ‘just circling back’ to see if we can ‘move the needle’ on ‘key initiatives’? NONE of those things are berries.

Publishing WTF moment:
I get a pitch for a book that's pro-AI pedagogy, asking me which proposal guidelines to use, as we have 2 files on our website.
We only have 1 file on our website.
The second file is 8 years old and not publicly available.
I ask where they got it. /1

One of my go-tos: "If no one's responsible for that task, that's exactly who does it"
So much of data management (and a lot of other task-oriented stuff) is just roles and responsibilities

At the beginning of a research project, it is important to assign and document roles, not just presume roles.
Doing so helps team members know exactly what is expected of them, allows them to develop standardized workflows, as well as create contingency plans for continuity of practices.

Scottish Research Cultures 2026 flip chart illustration, with a huge number of really well drawn and coloured doodles representing the various themes that have been discussed over the course of the day.
All conferences should have an official illustrator working live.

Fascinating to be in my third event in two weeks discussing research sharing, and again in a very different community. No publishers or librarians here (other than me!).

After a week in London at #R2RConf and #CopimConference my open research roadshow continues at a 'Scottish Research Integrity and Culture Week' event at @rcsed.bsky.social in Edinburgh where I'm on a panel to talk about 'expanding openness' for arts + humanities.

Absolutely honoured to say that Waterstones has picked Hekate as book of the month. Verse novels and poets do not normally get this kind of love, so I am BEYOND grateful for this. 🥹🖤

What might stop authors from wanting to publish an experimental book?
@emmagallon.bsky.social says often it’s a widespread lack of awareness of what can be done. What are the possibilities for publishing your research in different ways? Publishers need to show ppl what’s possible.

John Atkinson @uniwestpress.bsky.social put into words a concept I’ve had buzzing about my brain. It’s difficult to get buy in to produce experimental books because it is ‘too complicated’. It isn’t the technology that’s experimental, it’s their use in presenting a scholarly text. #CopimConference

This is excellent timing. I’m at the #CopimConference where accessibility was a big topic yesterday afternoon. I’m really pleased we’ve been able to increase the accessibility of our backlist titles with the help of our partners at Michigan 🥳 @charleswatkinson.bsky.social

Another good point from Pete Barr. Librarians aren’t the ultimate decision makers in their universities; lots of factors in play. No one who knows me would accuse me of supporting the status quo, but Aberdeen hasn’t left any of the deals. I’d be delighted to talk about that. #CopimConference

Zeyen: accessibility goes beyond the need for compliance with standards. Scholarly writing is often inaccessible to others. There are wider questions about good science communications and also a need to acknowledge how much time this can take #CopimConference

“Maybe, I would have been treated better if I had cited some of the editor in chief’s papers,” Bimonte, of the University of Siena, wrote in boldface in the email, which we have seen. Two days later, an unhappy editor at the journal quit, Retraction Watch has learned.

Remember, if someone asserts that your weekend plans of reading a good book, drinking multiple cups of tea, and indulging in a scandalous amount of cinnamon rolls “doesn’t sound exciting”, then your well-being is simply not important to them.
