dad's dad was a jack-of-all-trades, town musician, carpenter, violin maker. mom's dad was a career public servant starting as a food and drug inspector and ending up at treasury board overseeing the development of many of Canada's major airports. I guess one sounds rugged lol.

I was 14, in grade 10. I had a dentist appt that morning. came out of the appt just as they were starting to get news on the radio. sat in the car with my mom listening to the radio for awhile. when I got to class, no one knew, and none of my friends believed me. announcement made next period.

I should have mentioned my dad also had a lifelong history of being a complete rube. I have been going through his papers and like... he got involved in at least half a dozen different pyramid schemes. but he was a terrible salesman and often wound up lending money to potential customers
he was so lucky to have access to world-class cancer care (at no cost to him), had dedicated nurses and RDs and all the rest he could call to get actual medical advice to alleviate his symptoms.... but no, he put his trust in fucking supplements from the fucking internet
he was not an anti-vaxxer and did do chemo etc for his cancer (which did extend his life by a couple of years). but his insistence that actually supplements would save him and that his feelings were hurt that the rest of us wouldn't try supplements.... it was infuriating
my dad (who died of cancer last year) was into supplements for a long time. we had an argument about it (yet again) a few weeks before he died. he tried to tell me the reason no one knows their benefits is because "big pharma" doesn't fund trials on supplements 🙄

tbh, this was one big reason I moved back to canada after spending a decade and a half in the US. every time I came home to visit, I was noticing all the things that were changing positively here while everything in the US stayed the same or got worse. is canada perfect? no. but it is better.
