Isopod crossed with an echinoderm!
By which time we should be saying βYouβve got tankers of what?β
Macro photograph, in top view, of two insects standing on a cluster of small, 4-petalled white flowers. Both insects have a red head and thorax and black at their back ends. The beetle on the right is slightly broader, and has a narrow white line separating the red and black parts of its body, as to suggest a narrow ant waist.
Model and mimic: a clever longhorn beetle (Euderces reichei, at right) tries its best to look like a local carpenter ant, Campontous decipiens, as they both feed on a spring dogwood flower. Brackenridge Field Laboratory, Texas.
Never thought that the genus of ants π I worked on in my PhD would be the target of illegal wildlife trade. β€οΈ π but dont illegally trade them! www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...
It was bin day so there are the small empties veg caddies migrating down our road.
Imagine a child decades from now, standing in a barren field, looking at a history book. They will see photos of giantsβtrees that stood before empires roseβand they will ask us: "You knew they were the lungs of the planet. You knew they were ancient. Why did you let them die?"
Here's a cool tool a made to help you write more good.

One of my favourite arthropods. The pseudoscorpions turn up in sifted litter trays and stomp about with such attitude, even through they are so tiny!

Thanks Ian!
A satellite picture of a patch of rainforest that borders the sea. The land is deep green and covered with rainforest.
The same location viewed from satellite, but this time much of the green rainforest has been replaced by beige soil and covered with various buildings.
genuinely shocked by the before and after of an Indonesian mine, and to think this is just one mine in one country over the last 15 years π«

Oh ye gods, what have we done to our home?
Thank you. Does the eye colour vary also?
A better version of the photo of the fly on Alexanderβsβ flowersβ¦ this time without its face cropped off!

A fly sitting on the yellow/green flowers of Smyrnium olusatrum (Alexanders)
A close up photo of the fly showing the hairs which seem less dense than S. stercoraria and very dark eyes.
Any #diptera people able to help?
Looks like a Dung Fly but the eyes are v. dark. Seemed bigger and hair less dense than S. stercoraria. Long dark hairs on legs.
Not a great photo, no dorsal view (it was raining hard at the time).
Sussex, 09/3/26 on Smyrnium olusatrum (Alexanders).

Exciting to see a bucket-list spider while in Mexico!
An Ogre-faced Spider that I think must be an Asianopis sp. it also looks like there might only be one species present in Mexico? If that is the case this should be Asianopis aurita.

A stinking yellow Celandine flower shines in the sunshine. A tiny wild bee sits on the anthers and has pollen on its body.

Belle Tout Lighthouse shrouded in fog.
There is landscape out there in the fog!
The white cliffs and sea totally invisible to walkers.
Go on a walk they saidβ¦ itβll be lovely they saidβ¦
Coastal Sussex walking from Eastdean, down to the coast, over the cliffs including Beachy Head to Eastbourne.
It was sunshine when we started but as soon as we climbed up the chalk cliffs we had thick fog, with rain falling through the fog.
A fabulous golden fluffy fly sits on a nice fresh soggy cowpat.
Scathophaga stercoraria or Yellow Dungfly. βYellowβ just doesnβt do it justice. Itβs a glorious, fabulous gold and if it was a small mammal everyone would want one as a pet. Theyβre so fluffy!
iPhone photo, so not the sharpest but still a little beauty!

Sitting outside our one-room apartment (for the next two days) as the evening twilight developed listening to the birdsong:
* Greenfinch
* Wren
* Mistle Thrush
* Blue Tit
* Carrion Crow
* Robin
* Blackbird
It has to be said that the last two were doing the heavy lifting!

βSlugmagedonβ - I might steal that! The lack of a long hard freeze this winter means it will be a good (or bad if youβre a veg plant!) year for slugs.
A multi-lobed sponge is preserved within a spherical flint which has cracked in half. Some of the original structure of the sponge is preserved.
A trip to the Essex coast with my wife.
The beaches are shingle, generally well sorted by clast size⦠and they are all flint, derived from the nearby Cretaceous #chalk cliffs.
I canβt help myself, so while wandering along on a romantic walk, I found a #fossil #sponge.
