That just because you’ve trained someone to appear to be less different to you doesn’t mean that their life has been in any way improved.

What was also implied (imho) was that it was almost too easy to be signed off in that way. I don’t believe that there is evidence for that.
Agreed that’s an element of what was implied. But with no explanation of what *should* happen to “these people”, nor what the line between those who do need long term support and those who don’t is - and what support should be given to the former.
This made me really sad. Where is a good place for chronically ill people to be? And do we really think that they are there because it’s easy or available? What happens to them if these benefits are just taken away - because I’m not hearing anything about the alternative.
My personal experience says both can be true, but also “life”. Mistakes happen, people forget about stuff or went off without approval or or or… and then feel guilty and try and ignore it in the hope it will go away.
Sorry to hear this. Depends on what your requirements are but I’ve always liked the TP link Tapo range - pretty affordable, reactive to motion, good picture even in the dark. And you can record on an SD card rather than sending to someone else’s computer/the cloud
That’s not a mistake…
We’re all into stationery in this house, tbf. Stationery and formula 1…
Thank you so much, @biggreenbooks.bsky.social and @sallyhinkley.bsky.social - it’s such important work x
I would love to read this
Completely valid!! My latest delivery just arrived with refills for my beloved zento! (and please don’t look at my YouTube playlists…)
Oh how I wish that were true… 😂
LJ somehow passed me by!!
My daughter didn’t have text books for years at school - it drove me mad. Particularly for ND kids who may not have absorbed anything in class, there’s no one single source for them to refer to to see if they have understood. A million different online resources, but that’s a whole other challenge!
That said, TikTok remains my guilty pleasure…
Blogging and blogs (and RSS feeds… RIP google reader) were what made the Internet for me, and when social media started in force it felt largely like an extension of that - until they started being driven not by what you were choosing to follow but what they wanted you to…
I hate making book recommendations as they are so personal... but I promise I will not be offended if you don't like it!
I loved it, and something in me felt you might too. I hope the day got better x
You are a very good and pretty cat, and seeing this has reminded me that I've had a book recommendation in my head for you for easily a year and keep forgetting. And now am slightly nervous to make it in case you don't like it, but... Life Hacks for a Little Alien by Alice Franklin.
Oh yes. But not all of them. (And the ellipses…)
Absolutely. And for my kid and me, conversations, openness and education have been the best option. But every kid is different, which is why protecting them is so hard and means it helps to look at multiple angles
Welcome to a great club. Knowing yourself better can only be a good thing.
Great - I (in no way) feel a need to force anyone to use tech they don’t want or need. And for the record I ethically object to and deliberately don’t use multiple social media sites. And I have the freedom to do so.
Yes. I live in the real world, and deal with the facts as I find them, whether or not I like them. And if they show I’m wrong, I’ll happily change my view! I have many times in the past.
If I want to receive a DM on here I have to give a third party company I don’t know government ID or to allow it to scan my face and use some algorithm to decide if I’m old enough to get a message. Baby and bath water come to mind.
Only in the sense that harm in life is inevitable. We have allowed businesses to develop models which cause this harm. We can choose to ban or regulate those, like we do pyramid schemes, gambling etc and incentive child friendly design. Or say it’s too hard and ban kids and surveil everyone else.
No, just that the data already exists so we’d be foolish to ignore it and assume our guesses are better!
Agreed on the first point. Disagree on the last. Having grown up w/o the internet, been a young adult with it, and now having a teen with it, I’ve experienced some disadvantages (most more recently and which could be mitigated in the manner I’m suggesting) but many, hugely life enhancing advantages.
We already have countries that have implemented bans, that would be a good place to start?
If I was just showing my drivers licence to a guy in the shop who didn’t keep a copy or track every store I went into, that’s different. But also if we make it safe for everyone, what’s the need for age verification?
