Thank you for your service.
I keep reading about people who attended AWP picking up a "respiratory virus." Sigh. COVID doesn't always show up on tests right away. In a perfect or even slightly less terrible world, people would isolate, mask, and keep testing.
Other folks with Long COVID or chronic illness: any advice about fatigue? My cognitive symptoms are getting a lot better, thanks to the Cleveland Clinic, but I almost feel like the fatigue is getting worse.
All work is me avoiding writing.
We are living in the world the women researchers (Timnit Gebru, Joy Buolamwini, and others) featured in Coded Bias warned us about 6 years ago (years before any of the men in this field you usually hear about reached the same conclusions).
The National Cancer Institute hasn’t made a single grant this fiscal year as the Trump admin cuts federal funding for research.
Might ask my son if he wants to go look for Bigfoot later.

I've long wished I could have met the likely exhausted grad student who annotated the library copy of Ford Maddox Ford's The Good Solider that I read when I was an exhausted grad student. My favorite comment? "What an asshole."
Am I sick or am I sick of the world? Hard to say.
Woke up sick. Is it daylight savings, Long COVID, the world, etc? Really hard to discern at this point.
❤️❤️
I do what Ali tells me
I masked for most, but not all, of the conference, and during travel. I took a COVID/flu test when I got home and am negative so far 🤞
What a time to be aware of facts and information
America, come on, it's a little on the nose to have DST steal an hour from everyone's morning and thus make International Women's Day the shortest day of the year.
If you attended AWP, just a reminder that you should self-test for COVID, and if you end up becoming ill, please isolate and protect your community. It's the right thing to do.
If you’re feeling lost and discouraged in the state of the world and wondering what difference you can make you should check out this Humble Bundle. Despite the text below it’s about more than just organizing it’s about surviving and resisting too.
Good luck to all the parents today, darkest of days.

the thesis statement of our times
don’t forget to destroy your clocks tonight, walk away from your mortgage, just start driving, you’re free
There's no plan to prevent human trafficking during LA's megaevents and the World Cup starts in 100 days.
I talked to survivors, advocates, legal advisors, academics, and elected officials who are all sounding the alarm about how this will put LA's most vulnerable communities in even more danger
Perfect.
Glad you're finally getting some moisture.
Years ago, after I started to publish pretty obviously anti-fracking investigative work, I got recruited by a fracking company as well! Sometimes I think I should have done that, taken them down from the inside!
An acquaintance--who does not know me well for reasons that will become immediately apparent--just offered me a job in his AI company. How should I respond?
They say:
- the government must not weaken copyright law, and should instead strengthen licensing, transparency & enforcement
- the government should stop prioritising large multinational tech firms
3/5
- AI training isn’t ‘learning’ and shouldn’t be treated as such
The House of Lords has been absolutely consistent on this, and they are totally right. Will the government listen?
