It was around this time that Shen Yi finally mustered up the courage to present his letter of resignation to His Majesty.
After listening to his reasons, Chang Geng set the memorial aside and instructed Shen Yi to go home and think things over.

Chang Geng hissed and made a grab for his hand but caught only air.
He threw himself at Gu Yun. "Not as thick as yours! Hand those over! I clearly intended to give them to Shen-xiansheng back then..."
"Give them to whom? Say that again."
A prickling sensation shivered across Gu Yun’s scalp at the touch, and he hastily stepped back. “I’m trying to reason with you here—what are you pawing at me for?”

As if sensing his gaze, Li Feng looked up and met Gu Yun’s eyes.
When the court session concluded that day, Gu Yun was kept behind in the palace.
He fidgeted in his seat for a while, then snuck a glance at Prince Yan’s upright back and scooted over to Gu Yun. “You did it?”
Gu Yun once again had no idea where to begin. After a moment of hesitation, he offered a vague hum of agreement.
Shen Yi was appalled.
After handing all his various responsibilities to Shen Yi, Gu Yun finally laid down his mental armor and let himself sleep like the dead in the commander’s tent.
Gu Yun let out a quiet groan. Aches seeped from every joint, and his eyelids were so heavy he could no longer lift them. He struggled to find his voice. “Is my little brother still in good health?”
“…Who?” asked Chang Geng.
Li Feng was long accustomed to the sounds of flattery and not so easily moved. He gazed impassively at Prince Yan, waiting for the meaning hidden in his words to reveal itself.
Chang Geng didn’t know whether he was becoming more delicate with age or whether his insatiable appetite for Gu Yun was simply growing.
Unfortunately for Liao Ran, who had happened to wander in at precisely the wrong moment, he had become a rare specimen— a human shield with an exceptionally shiny head.
Chang Geng met his open gaze and sucked in a deep breath. He rubbed his forehead.
What am I thinking? Am I going mad?
Gu Yun had always been his source of solace…but on reflection, that stopped being so the moment Chang Geng’s sentiments had overflowed their banks.
He leaned close to his ear and murmured, “Save your mouth for other things.”
Gu Yun had no rejoinder.
He increasingly found that the saying “those who come near ink are stained dark” was entirely true: Chang Geng seemed to be acquiring more and more of Gu Yun’s own elegant demeanor by the day.

With the fearless honesty of a child, Ge Pangxiao called, “Uncle Shiliu…”
Cao Niangzi chided him at once under his breath, “It’s my lord!”
“Heh heh, my lord.” Ge Pangxiao was all smiles as he drew closer and asked, “Your house doesn’t seem as fancy as Magistrate Guo’s.”
“Would I look at him?” Gu Yun paused, then made himself seem all the more suspicious by responding to his own question. “Hardly. Don’t assume the meager heart of an old maid like you can take the measure of a great general like me, with a heart large enough to contain a fleet of a hundred dragons.”
Gu Yun burst into laughter. “Oh yes, that sounds totally believable. I’ve seen people carry lovers’ tokens, but this is the first time I’ve seen someone so attached to their hated foe. What kind of sentimental hatred is this? Please enlighten me.”
He rubbed his stomach in misery and thought to himself, If someone brought me a couple of shaobing flatbreads right now, I swear to heaven, I’d marry them on the spot.
Chang Geng entered just then bearing a bowl of hot noodle soup.
Shen Yi’s voice abandoned him.
He had no idea how he managed to land and nearly sprained his ankle gaping like an idiot.
“You bastard, you’ve been raising a rebel army right under our noses. You’ve got the whole gamut: heavy armor and light pelts, a line of parhelion bows two kilometers long—you even have hawks to deploy. You’re a bigger spender than our Great Liang’s Jiangnan Navy. Impressive work, Fu Zhicheng!”
