Really interesting post! The Fair Library Jobs manifesto update and blog post to cover AI is in the works, but the broad conclusion will be the same as this: "we should not use AI to evaluate job applications at this time."

βBy meeting our members' simple and fair demands, leadership at the British Library can restore trust from its staff and send a clear message to Government about the need to properly fund the UK's vibrant but imperilled culture sector.β PCS gen. sec. Fran Heathcote

Were you outraged by this salary? Now is the time to do something about it and support British Library workers #BritishLibraryOnStrike www.pcs.org.uk/news-events/...
This post has been in draft a while but it feels particularly timely given the strike over pay that starts tomorrow (27th Oct) at the British Library. If you've ever despaired at the low salaries at the BL now is the time to act in solidarity www.pcs.org.uk/news-events/... #BritishLibraryOnStrike
I've just emailed my MP in support of British Library workers on strike over pay #BritishLibraryOnStrike
As my own union ballots its members in response to a paltry pay offer of 1.4% (whilst inflation is at 4.5%), now is the time to stand together as #libraryworkers for #fairpay for the work we do.

PCS union poster showing the calendar for the pickets and rallies at the upcoming strike for decent wages by library workers at the British Library.
The risible wages are well-known in the wider field of the library, museum, gallery and archive world. Iβd like to think public opinion is with the people who make the place click day-in-day-out; they deserve better.
Knowledge may be free but labour isnβt: spread the wealth and pay the workers!

New Fair Library Jobs blog post! On those low paid jobs it's difficult to call out, complexities around pay, the bleakness of the sector, and what you can do about it (spoiler: nag CILIP to Do Better and #JoinAUnion)

"The principles of the Fair Library Job Manifesto (2022) related to interview practice should be adopted, including sharing questions in advance to all candidates irrespective of a disclosure of neurodivergence."
@nlisn.bsky.social is attempting to assess the proportion/spread of neurodiversity across across all UK library sectors. If you identify as neurodivergent, with or without a formal diagnosis, or suspect you may be - please fill in our short survey!
Reblogging/signal-boosting much appreciated!

I'm always impressed by organisations/institutions who send out interview topics or questions ahead of time, unpromoted or solicited. π Suggests only good things about their overall approach to inclusivity and accessibility!

Update: Lambeth library workers agreed to strike, but it got called off because of the progress made in negotiations with management! Sounds like really significant concessions on job cuts, pay and conditions - brilliant work all! lambeth-unison.org/2025/07/02/l...
