3/3 JF died over 5 years ago, and has had zero real influence on public policy for 30 years. Since then, it's on us to have made, or not made, the case for bikes in public policy. It's also on us to not judge previous generations through our eyes, and our sensibilities. Let JF rest in peace.
2/? Time goes on and things change. We now know that safe bike infrastructure and roads safer for everyone are within reach. We can and should work toward that, instead of just trying to educate the masses on traffic survival techniques. Only a few will ever take this up.
50 years ago, society was different. Even The Netherlands was just getting started with bike advocacy - "Stop de kindermoord!" - and the idea of useful networks of bike lanes and paths in the US was unfathomable. Riding in traffic was inevitable, and JF came up with a way to deal with it. 1/?
