I genuinely saw the RFK quote and thought of Showa before I even clocked that you were the one retweeting it lol…

I would say more than manga history, in Japan's history.

When I moved to Japan and discovered Mizuki Shigeru, it was one of those mind exploding moments when I realized there was a single person so incredibly important to the art, history, and culture of the nation... that I had never heard of.

It’s understandable- I think it’s also just people not understanding Mizuki’s role in Manga history, and I include myself there tbh.

I love his work, and reading the accompanying essays was massively helpful, but I feel like I’ve barely scratched the surface at this point!

I’m going to need to give it a read before I attempt to tackle it on the pod - great to know already that there is an English translation thanks to the essay at the start πŸ™Œ

@zackdavisson.com’s essays in between sections were great and got me up-to speed with various Yokai / historical context so I could enjoy the stories.

It’s not to say it wouldn’t work without them, as it’s full of Mizuki’s charm and humor, but it certainly made a lot of the book more accessible!

At first I found it a little hard to adapt to its structure: rather than a short story collection of 6 of 7 larger tales, it’s more a collection of folklore and local knowledge blended into a tapestry of the mysteries surrounding Tono.

It’s unique format that is worth the effort to adapt to!

Tono Monogatari is an adaptation of a foundational text in Japanese folklore by the same name.

It’s a project Mizuki took on later in life (2008-9) that adapts the original text and interjects Mizuki’s own travels to Tono city!

Reading it so close to Showa meant I did feel a little bit of repetition in themes and plot points (the cinema’s projector being stolen), but there’s so much going on this didn’t really bother me.

It’s a very touching, heartfelt read that just made me appreciate Mizuki’s voice as a Mangaka!

Nonnonba was a pretty quick read despite its length, but was packed full of interesting stories!

The main focus is of course on Nonnonba, a Grandmother-like figure for young Shigeru who taught the young Mangaka all about Yokai.

You also get to see a lot of his young life - and it wasn’t easy!

So after a very busy period, I’m back to do a quick write up of the last two Mizuki books in the reading pile (for now at least): Nonnonba and Tono Monogatari!

I’m going to be pretty brief here as I loved both and am debating which to do a podcast on in the near future so here’s a top line summary!

If you do want to read it, I would say that β€˜Culture in Nazi Germany’ by Michael H Kater is a good companion piece.

It really shows how petty people in power can be and that a lot of what drives censorship and cruelty stems from flawed beliefs and a sense of entitlement…

It’s not a work I’ll be in a rush to read again, but that’s likely that the book just isn’t as strong for me as Showa was… Though given I think that book’s a masterpiece, perhaps that’s a little unfair!

I’m expecting good things from Nonnonba, so let’s see how that goes!

The most important lesson of the book is one we all need to take heed of: if someone claims peace but invades foreign nations, maybe don’t take them at their word…

Mizuki’s art is on point and there is definitely some joy to be had in seeing these historic β€˜strong men’ rendered as caricatures
