Soil: the magic ingredient
by Satish Kumar, Issue 312, January/February 2019
Satish Kumar visits musician and award-winning arable and livestock farmer Andy Cato on his farm in France, where he learns of Andy's passion for ancient grains and farming that doesn’t
"mess with the soil".
Satish was delighted to discover that wheat is grown with the help of horses rather than heavy machinery, to protect the soil and organisms within it.
“Our life depends on the few inches of the earth we call topsoil. Here we take good care of the soil, so we get good bread.”
— Andy Cato

A true cavalier
by Sandy Brown, Issue 246, January/February 2008
Sandy Brown celebrates the work of Heather Jansch, whose life-size driftwood horses can be seen at the Eden Project in Cornwall. She discovers an artist whose experience as a painter and deep knowledge of horses enables her to work intuitively with the form.
Of all Heather’s animal works, Sandy most admires the smaller bronzes inspired by the Chinese T’ang horses, reflecting, “her work does have that archetypal quality. Each bronze piece represents all horses, not just one horse as her driftwood ones do.”

The horse as a wild architect
by Tiffany Francis-Baker, Issue 340,
September/October 2023
Nature writer and illustrator Tiffany Francis-Baker reflects on the vital role that horses play in our landscape’s past and future. From Dartmoor ponies that have roamed the moor for 3,500 years, through journeys from coaching houses to inns, to their vital role in rewilding projects such as Knepp, horses are part of our ecosystem.

"Remember you are not alone and you do not need to finish the work... It helps no one if you sacrifice your joy because others are suffering. We people who care must be attractive, filled with that joy, so that others recognise that caring, helping and being generous are not a burden, they are a joy. Give the world your love, your service, your healing, but you can also give it your joy. This, too, is a great gift." ~ Desmond Tutu, from The Book of Joy

Deepen Your Roots
The Resurgence Trust is delighted to share an upcoming collaboration with Rooted Healing’s year-long programme Deepen Your Roots.
Rooted in principles that closely align with Resurgence’s vision of ecological, social and spiritual regeneration, the programme explores how the crises of our time are symptoms of deeper disconnection – from land, community and meaning. Deepen Your Roots brings together ecological thinking, cultural renewal and deep inner work, creating space for reflection, grief and re-rooting alongside
practical visions for change.
Satish Kumar, founder of The Resurgence Trust, will be contributing to the programme later in the year. His participation reflects a shared commitment to reverence for life, localised living, and the understanding that lasting change arises when inner transformation and outer action move together.

Animals and healing
Wednesday 25 February • 7—8.30pm GMT
Online, via Zoom
Shamans have always said that it is the animals who heal us. Pascale Petit’s work demonstrates poetry as a kind of shamanism, allowing author and reader to shapeshift in the imagination, and the animals are the constant medicine in her work. Jay Griffiths’ new book encompasses how animals heal the society as well as the psyche, electrifying our minds and vitalising our cultures.
Together, Jay and Pascale will create an event that shows, through both personal experience and their writing, that animals are our healers. They will be discussing their experiences, reading from their work, and opening up the conversation to the audience
Creating music with plants and fungi – a conversation between two biogenic composers
Tuesday 24 March • 7—8.30pm GMT • via Zoom
Biogenic music is a beautiful intersection of art, biology, ecology and technology. It reminds us that music is not just a human invention, but a shared language of life itself, echoing the rhythms and voices of the living world. How might we be changed once we have experienced the voices of the unheard mycorrhizal world through this art form?
Alex H Duncan, who is also known as 'the composer in the woods', returns for another fascinating exploration into his music making with plants and fungi, this time accompanied by film and TV composer Adrian Carson-Smith.
Resurgence talk: Guy Hayward
'Walking ourselves home'
Wednesday 25 March • 7—8pm GMT • via Zoom
How is pilgrimage positioned in this modern world to help us find our direction again? How can we visit the sacred places and engage in spiritual practices along the footpath to know who we are? What gifts can we bring back from our journeys to everyday life?
Guy Hayward is Director of the British Pilgrimage Trust, which he co-founded in 2014 to promote the practice of 'bring your own beliefs' pilgrimage in Britain. He has been leading pilgrimages since 2016, guiding people in group singing about Nature as well as folk and sacred songs. He co-authored the book Britain’s Pilgrim Places.

Progression by Peter Bradford, Vol. 2 No. 5, January/February 1969
This poem exposes the tragic irony at the heart of 'progress': that in trying to possess, protect and dominate, humanity steadily impoverishes itself.
In its final lines, the poem confronts us with the ultimate cost of this trajectory — a future in which nothing is left to remember.
Read poem > https://ocean.exacteditions.com/issues/47748/spread/10?rc=540b7844-752e-4809-8727-06e4e2d33e5c
Three poems by Thomas Land, Tony Curtis & P.W. Vol. 5 No. 2, May/June 1974
These three poems reflect on freedom as a natural state, and on the forces that constrain it.
From lightness and movement to violence and waiting, they echo a central Resurgence concern: that when life is controlled rather than cared for, both Nature and the human spirit suffer.

The Ground that Seeks Love by Paul Matthews, Issue 213, July/August 2002
This two-poem selection reflects on attention, presence, and the meaning held within everyday acts.
Drawing on art, memory, and the mundane, the poems show how meaning arises when we truly attend to what is before us — a jug, a gesture, a moment of work — rather than standing apart as detached observers.

The Uses of the Globe by David Broadbridge, Issue 284, May/June 2014
Seen from space, the Earth is both fragile and alive: the melting ice, rising seas and changing weather remind us that we are not owners, but guests.
The poem invites us to attention, care and shared responsibility, showing that survival and joy come from tending the world as our true dwelling place.

1966: a brave beginning
by Greg Neale, Issue 290, May/June 2015
In May 1966, Resurgence published its very first issue — a small, independent magazine born into a world already marked by political unrest, nuclear anxiety and ecological neglect.
At a time when environmental concern was far from mainstream, Resurgence dared to ask deeper questions about peace, humanity and our relationship with the Earth.

The use of the land
by E.F. Schumacher, Vol. 2 No. 7, May/June 1969
E.F. Schumacher was one of the most influential early contributors to Resurgence, and his thinking helped shape its intellectual foundations.
Schumacher shared with Resurgence a deep scepticism of unlimited growth, technocratic thinking, and economic systems divorced from human and ecological values.
His writing embodied a core principle that Resurgence championed from the start: that economics must serve life, not the other way around.

People’s politics in a non-violent society
by Satish Kumar and Vinoba Bhave,
Vol. 2 No. 8/9, July—October 1969
In a landmark interview, Satish Kumar sits down with Vinoba Bhave, the renowned Indian philosopher and activist, to explore the radical idea of self-governance and the true meaning of political revolution.
Far from advocating violent upheaval or blind obedience to state power, Bhave calls for a revolution in the conscience and minds of the people — a shift from dependence on government to active, ethical participation in the life of communities.

60 years of Resurgence
“What impressed me from the start — and still does — is the way the magazine resists the dichotomies of art and science, idealism and realism. It’s a place where these things meet and infuse. That’s more than just important. It’s essential.” — Craig Jordan-Baker
Since 1966, Resurgence has been a meeting place for ideas that nourish both head and heart. Visionary editors, thinkers, artists and readers have shaped a movement rooted in compassion, community and care for the Earth.
As we enter our 60th anniversary year, we honour the legacy that has brought us here — and we warmly invite you to become part of what comes next.
