Choosing not to educate yourself is - as you said - a choice, yes. But at that point, we're arguing semantics. The matter of fact remains that not everyone is knowledgeable about everything, through choice or otherwise.
And yet: Here we are - A world where our presidents challenge the mental capability of a common bacterium, while people refuse to even bother engaging with anything that builds their skills or knowledge. I don't like it. But arguing otherwise just seems out of touch with reality

I agree with you in general, but a lot of people either don't have full familiarity with all of these topics or lack fundamental familiarity in at least one of these areas. This is where people tend to rely on outside information, assuming interest exists in the first place
