🌫️🌈 A beautiful, rare sight!
A fog bow appeared Monday near Ridge, Maryland, in St. Mary's County & CWG reader John Gasper captured this stunning photo.
Fog bows are cousins of rainbows and form when sunlight interacts with the tiny droplets in fog, producing a wide, pale rainbow with little color.

There are people walking around right now saying “I should get a library card.” And then just… not doing it.

@capitalweather.bsky.social sunset last night was gorgeous. Interesting cloud formations too!
Ate here for the first time yesterday. Best tacos I've had ever in the DMV: maps.app.goo.gl/vvuZ5riAJsg1...

NEW: National Weather Service expands winter storm watch into DC. Its forecast is for 3" in the Beltway area but the watch is for the potential for locally heavier amounts.
We're working on a fresh briefing that will post later this morning.

Went on my first dinghy ride of the year yesterday now that the ice in the channel is finally melting.
Still can't quite get past Market Docks, but the channel is thawed up until there (with some large chunks breaking off and floating freely).

Houseboat behind sailboat is 2/3 underwater at James Creek. Photo taken at night from seawall
Crazy this winter how many boats have sank. 3 sank but we're recovered before fully submerging at Wharf Marina.
Below is a photo of a houseboat currently 2/3 under ice at James Creek.
3 sank in Navy Yard. One caught fire from a space heater issue at Columbia Island.
It's been a rough winter.
Crazy to think kids are now growing up where this is a useful and necessary lesson 😳

The Washington Channel is 3/4 unfrozen 🎉. Only ice remaining is upchannel from District Pier at 9th St SW.

How did you handle DC's big snice (snow+ice) storm? On the boats, we're happy no one sank. We're also looking forward to the ice finally melting next week ...
The closest marine forecast is from just downriver near Alexandria. You can see the details here: marine.weather.gov/MapClick.php...
Saturday looks brutal with sustained winds from 24 to 27kts and gusts up to 50kt. Waves 2 to 3 ft (☠️).

The aptly-named "Snow Moon" was a stunner Sunday night.
Check out this incredible capture from Dave Lyons.
Picture-perfect framing as the full moon rose above the U.S. Capitol and aligned with the Statue of Freedom.

I ran around the tidal basin on snowcrete an kept thinking skating would have been more fun.
Colder than the last few mornings to start our Saturday. Low of 11 in DC is second coldest this season. Cold is around peak today as winds increase from offshore storm. Should struggle to get out of the single digit wind chills. Near 20 highs.

Next snow chance...
A weak weather impulse is expected to slip by to our south late Tuesday night into Wednesday.
We lean toward a dusting to an inch as most probable, with the chance of more than an inch just one in three.

@capitalweather.bsky.social I'm not sure when I last can remember seeing the Tidal Basin this frozen.
I wish NPS would allow Tidal Basin hockey!
Claiming parking spaces with furniture is anti-social and you can't convince me otherwise.
I've dug out at least 4 total parking spaces on my block, plus cleared out parts for 3 more. It's a commons! Work with your neighbors. Lots of folks disagree with me, but I just can't do the furniture thing.
I have only cuss words for anyone that thinks they "own" or can "claim" a parking spot.
