Prodigiously stupid!
Went into AppleTV intending to finish out my last Oscar documentary nominee (COME SEE ME IN THE GOOD LIGHT) but saw that there's a new season of MONARCH: LEGACY OF MONSTERS and am giving myself the grace to watch something dumb.
Can't believe they gave that freakishly large man MVP
Team Italian Nonnas

Tamari Bar is making a Vegan Area 206 Curry?!?
(It was a very sad awakening when I realized, several bowls into the season, their regular curry was definitely not at all even remotely vegetarian.)
If nothing else, the Mariners have one of the most elite teams in the game running the park's concessions. Piroshky? Crab dip? Get me this snack ferry boat yesterday.

It's like the inverse of the Ehrlich year-end mash-up, for the Oscars. (Warning: Spoilers for every nominee and so many ads).
When you're a Jet you're a Jet
Also: fully missed the Shutter Island end credits! I watched that movie in bed with the flu, kind of appropriate.
For sure, the movie is much subtler about that with the "look at me" callback. I've heard others make the facile complaint that it's not a one-to-one match with the plot, which ... of course it isn't.
Maybe it's cope, but I just accept it as Zhao accepting that there's no cheap magic. Can't pierce the veil without some big swings, including bringing an audience onboard by repurposing something that's familiar.
Right. Buckley's tremendous performance is both essential to the film's success, but has also seemingly obscured a lot of the subtleties among those who aren't looking closely and see only "melodrama".
(Same with the controversial Richter needle drop, which I famously don't mind at all).
Loved this deep dive! Maybe I'm the crazy one, but nothing in the movie made me think Zhao was suggesting the plot of Hamlet was meant to have been directly inspired by the death of Hamnet. I just saw it as a depressed dad using the mystical power of art to imagine his kid as a tortured prince.
This, for instance, is extremely insightful, but I remain deeply perplexed that so many invent a major sticking point in the preposterous conclusion that the film is suggesting that the *plot* of Hamlet is literally inspired by the death of Hamnet.
I am so glad that the Oscars settled into One Battle After Another vs. Sinners because otherwise rare good takes like this would've been lost in the insufferably messy scrums of The Hamnet Wars.
In a world of cookie-cutter nonfiction, I guess I admire the Documentary branch for really challenging us all to consider the meaning of "best". With CUTTING THROUGH ROCKS, showing the existence of an incredible person surmounting often unbelievable obstacles just might be sufficient.
At Sundance people are desperate for *anything* to be good enough to justify the trip.
WBC making me realize how weird it is that baseball's a sport where you shake hands with your teammates instead of opponents at the end of a game.
Finally some good offseason news
Another excellent Petzold needle drop
Oh, me too
haha, of course this is their vote for song.
Skipping only those three films (Sentimental Value, Bugonia, and the Secret Agent) should *also* disqualify them from voting in: Directing, Lead Actress, Lead Actor, Supporting Actress, Supporting Actor, International, Original Screenplay, Adapted Screenplay, Editing, Score, and Casting.
Yet another anonymous Oscar voter admits to not watching three of the best picture nominees! Great system they've got going over there!
No one believes me when I say "even better"
KOKUHO isn't perfect but it's one of the few films on my Oscar "deathrace" so far that I'm glad I saw and probably only watched because it had a hair and makeup nomination.
what a terrible way for The Pride Match in Seattle to inevitably be cancelled.
Ah, my favorite day of the year, in which I am made to feel insane for believing that it is better for morning to be light and evening to be dark.
