This same is true for any number of members of Congress over the past 50 years not to mention the thousands of representatives at the various state houses across the country.
Obviously in any system that purports to represent 350M people only a few will be able to participate at the highest level of government but people like Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton, and Barack Obama were "regular people" who worked their way up and did not come from particular wealth or privilege.
The usual path to higher levels of government is by achieving name recognition at lower levels of government.
this is just wrong. there are something like a half million elected positions in the USA and almost all of them are in local government.
