Science doesnโ€™t just live in labs. It lives in forests, tidepools, and city parks.

Dr. Jessie Rack studies ecosystems and teaches others how to read the stories nature is telling.

Podarcis bocagei on a rock. He has mottled stripes of alternating black and green down his back and gray and black symmetrically mottled markings on his back and tail. Heโ€™s male so he probably has around 18 torso vertebrae, whereas a female would be more likely to have 20.

We tend not to think about lizards as exemplars of sexual dimorphism, but there are multiple examples from different clades of females having more vertebrae than males.

Itโ€™s usually 1 or 2 more vertebrae in the torso. Probably so thereโ€™s more room for babies!๐ŸฆŽ๐Ÿงช

To academics out here who still see this, what do you do when you lose the joy of doing science?

If you are a PI or a supervisor, what do you when you see your grad student/postdoc spiral and lose their joy and passion?

Asking for me. ๐Ÿ˜…

Probably a reach here but I'm looking for someone (early career maybe) who would be willing to mentor me as I navigate the post-PhD life. I feel lost on a lot of things and would be grateful to bounce ideas and experiences with someone who's been through a couple of years post-PhD. ๐Ÿ˜ญ

More physician nutrition education is good but will minimally address the barriers preventing integration of evidence-based nutrition interventions into the healthcare system. Still major issues of knowledge & training, time, & reimbursement.

Yepp. Too many folks pretend that the underlying unscientific thinking that drives anti-vaccine sentiments doesn't also drive their nutrition sentiments: appeal to nature+ cherry picking data + prioritizing handwavey mechanisms over clinical evidence.

A rodent hand, with four short fingers with curved claws. The short thumb has a dirty, awkwardly human-looking nail.

A rodent hand, with four short fingers with curved claws. The short thumb has a dirty, awkwardly human-looking nail.

Reminder: most rodents have thumb nails rather than claws.

In fact the ancestor of all rodents probably had nails.

They probably evolved independently from our nails but for similar reasons: nails are good for dexterous food handling.
