Natureβs truest Vday love story: it is not rare to hear your first Northern Cardinal of the year on a sunny Valentines Day in Southern Canada, and to add to the romance, Cardinals mate for life β€οΈ

A still life photograph of a spring floral arrangement with a watermelon, shallots, butterflies, and a Hermit Thrush, all against a dramatic dark background.
βVase of flowersβ a floral still life painting by Jan Davidsz. de Heem, circa 1660, depicting a luxuriant floral arrangement with tulips, poppies, among other blooms, and insects.
On the left, a still life photo using local flowers in spring 2023, by yours truly. On the right, my inspiration: a painting by Jan Davidsz. de Heem, circa 1660.
Thank you!
It is indeed a green sweat bee of the genus Agapostemon, not sure which species.
As a long time pollinator advocate, Iβm always amazed at the intricacies of biodiversity. Here, flies that mimic almost perfectly some wrongfully despised members of the social wasp group π πͺ°

Lol, perhaps, but you might change your mind feeling our weather today (currently-17C) π
Yeah, been cheated all my life
Yummmm
So envious
Sadly, Iβve planted over 300 bulbs of at least 3 different varieties over the years, and I only get a handful to bloomβ¦

Yeah no fair!
So jealous of everyone in the UK seeing #snowdrops in their gardens (itβs like -10C in Montreal π).

See a duck, post a #duck (now thatβs my kinda content π¦)
This #WoodDuck hen and her ducklings were spooked on a Vermont pond last June.
