Skip and Loafer would be perfect for this mood - high school friendship and romance with solid characterisation and very sweet protags.

Another plug before I go to bed - I’ve had a lot of lovely messages already from folk who have listened and enjoyed and I couldn’t be happier. Go listen to Welcome to Fosters!

It's out, it's out, today's the day!

Catch me voicing a certain mysterious, and surely not villainous, media magnate in this Australian-made Rusty Quill audio drama about working wizards down under - first episode just dropped!

Google AI search summary claiming that "hearts and diamonds" "in the context of "bob dylan" "usually refers to" a song from blood on the tracks, but is also "intrinsically linked to Joan Baez's song 'diamonds and rust,'" which is total nonsense.

one way AI has fucked up search results is that -- to anthropomorphise AI a little -- it's a fucking poseur. when it doesn't know, it assumes a confident stance and says "oh, yeah, usually when people say that they mean this, check it out" and then just starts spewing bullshit

This study confirms something I suspected - LLMs trained on medical case studies are good at diagnosing from case studies. But when they have to interview a patient who doesn't know which information is relevant or how to describe it in medical jargon, their accuracy plummets.

i'm not like a strict pacifist or anything but i do think it's a problem that the higher you rise in government, the more violence you're expected to authorize in very casual and routine ways

not even the big stuff, more the "annual budget sign-off, sir, just a re-up" on human pain

Watching disabled people around the world mourn Alice is a reminder of the good aspect of the internet. 30 years ago, few people outside of SF would ever have known Alice existed. I never would have met her. The internet connected us all. Let’s honor Alice’s memory by using that power and community.

They are also intentionally conflating machine-learning and generative AI slop to confuse and try to make GenAI seem necessary. Google Maps traffic stuff is machine learning, not GenAI, for example. Auto-correct is too. Don't let them make you lose the thread. GenAI slop is slop.

would anyone like my recommendations of gay romance books i really liked. i have a bunch up my sleeve now, they are pretty much all fairly raunchy historical fiction

One of the best things about this book - which can reasonably be described as a Jewish High Holidays romance - is that it contains an exquisite line about using your procrastination time more joyously and fully. It's so sweet and I recommend it so much I may reread it tonight.

Fear isn't the same of cowardice <3 You don't deserve to berate yourself or call yourself names for working through a totally understandable fear. You have learned something about yourself that is frightening because it matters and you matter.

Tumblr post from every-lemon

so my spouse is part of a weirdly intense but mostly benign men's workout group that meets at like, 5:30am outside every day, even in winter. they do a lot of burpees and lugging cinder blocks up hills and stuff.
they take turns leading the workouts and tomorrow is his turn. I asked what he was planning. he handed me a sheet of William Carlos William poems from a large stack he'd printed.
I said "what" and he explained, helpfully, "it's a William Carlos William themed workout." I asked what inspired it and he said "l've been planning this for months."

it was a smash hit.
a dozen guys showed up (more than usual). spouse brought a red wheelbarrow and they took turns bringing cinder blocks up the hill with it. then they broke up in teams and did a relay with an "icebox" (cooler filled with 40lbs of ice). at the end he opened the cooler to reveal it was full of beach plum lacroix and all the guys cheered. they drank sparkling water as he read 'approach of winter' out loud.
he was home by 6:30am.

A $500 billion tech company's core software product is encouraging child suicide It sounds horrific. It should. Let's be clear about the material circumstances of what's happening rather than handwaving about 'the dangers of AI'

{content warning: suicide} GenAI is encouraging teens to kill themselves.

re: chatgpt and suicide/psychosis, if somebody talked like that to other people in any of my peer support groups they would be banned instantly. a healthcare or psychiatric provider who did so would be stripped of their licensing. a crisis hotline would be sued into oblivion. shut it the fuck down

There's a Stunning Financial Problem With AI Data Centers Given the rate at which tech companies are spending on data centers, current revenues would have to increase ten-fold just to break even.

New semester new AI policy for my syllabus. Drawn from my prior policy, @melhogan.bsky.social 's very clear and concise recent post about AI's problems, and reading "Empire of AI" this summer. For context, this is for a creative coding class in an art department.

A key point in Fahrenheit 451 is that books were banned because they made people depressed and uncomfortable. The novel's protagonist, Montag, is taken into custody after he reads a poem that makes a woman cry because she realizes the emptiness of her life.
