"She Got Dat Zuniga Thang Goin' On (Ms. Daphne Zuniga" β€” The Psychedelic Snarl, β„–137

Well, I went and had the greatest day in my life up to this point and the projects and thought frequencies that sprouted from this fertile ground are certainly an interesting lot. When my heart sings, I listen.

It was once again time to modify my setup cause I was beginning to feel a bit restricted. We hadn't upgraded since β„–40.

This Zuniga piece was largely an experiment to see how much detail I could manage... and without psychedelic flourishes of any kind.

This one needed to be a portrait as natural as I could manage. I fought the trip hard every step of the way, using it only to supplement the heart.

The shot of Ms. Daphne Zuniga is from the excellent film The Sure Thing. A classic. I can scarcely imagine how in blue heck anyone would be unable to fall in love with this girl in this movie.

It was a fun experiment and I was amazed by how much we were able to paint in there. I'd say we did pretty dang alright by the woman.

Die uralte Morla. Morla, the Ancient One.

I was settling in to tackle the turtle leg of our little Reptile Dysfunction sub-series and the concept that hollered out loudest was 'Morla by Moonlight.' Morla, of course, being a character from Michael Ende's beautiful Die Unendliche Geschichte, alias The NeverEnding Story.

To strike the more familiar chords, we chose to depict movie Morla. She resides in the Swamp of Sadness when we meet her, but I thought maybe I'd try to depict her in happier times, placing her in a moonlit forest of giant trees, a landscape far more vibrant than that of the post-Nothing Fantasia.

For what it's worth, I believe she'd still be the same ol' grumbly, underwhelmed sage we know and love 🀣🀣🀣

This postery little sub-project here represents a bit of a concerted shift into different realms. This'll series'll be the last, for what I aim to be a while, to feature a nude subject.

Recent happenings in the Living Trip have influenced me in surprising ways and I'm finding new and incredibly beautiful things spilling into my trips like it ain't no thang.

This second piece is my best attempt at the Martian sunset that was recently captured and sent our way.

Unlike other efforts of mine, where text was designed and applied afterward, this piece features built-in text. There is no clean shot of the entire sunset scene.

Within the text is an attempt at a lovely, warm summer evening or morning scene with a nude subject.

The text itself is one of my favourite mantras, culled from the musical Hair's closing song "The Flesh Failures."

"Plume" is "Bloom" but with subject and text reversed. I had to fill the missing bits from that piece here. So I've incompletely completed each piece twice at this point.

The concept is that the nude subject is to become less of a feature as we move forward. The individual pieces of the four-part Axios series were designed as posters to be hung in a home.

Finished uploading my entire output. Brand new stuff one per day after this!

The second part of my 'night on bald mountain' trip. Fantasia is a great head movie and this whole trip can be compared quite closely to the film's Bald Mountain.

I worked on the pieces back-to-back, to preserve the precise feeling, and tried my best to use the same palette.

The boo-boo: I mixed 2 chemicals that had no business getting organised within my system. The resulting trip split my head right open and made a whimpering child out of me.

No one to turn to. I was in for 10-24 hours of waking nightmare. A 'physician, heal thyself' challenge.

The trip: I was so much nothing trapped in a rotting skull. Waves of full-spectrum stimulation attack. Horrific imagery... cruel, whispery thoughts aligned against my entire existence... Ice cold chills... An inability to find any amount of comfort... A powerful sense of impending doom...

Now, we have this lovely little kitty cat we call Millie. Tinkle. Milliecat. We've known and loved Millie since 2007. Witnessed her arc from sassy, scrappy little runt of a kitten to cantankerous senior citizen. The reality: Poor Millie has likely entered the final stage of her time on this great Earth.

The Bastid Father of All Trips' ultimate mistake was trying to quake me with this. It initially succeeded, stamping what was left of me down with one savage hoof.

Oh, but what glory the memories of this little companion creature are. Here, at last, was something I could grab onto. A focal point thru the nightmare. I felt myself rise to dwarf the size of whatever two-pronged damn Chernobog was running this show.

It subsided. Every so often, it'd creep up again but my Milliecat talisman fought it off each time. Absolutely alright now. Back to normal. Glad to have made it thru with new insights. Baaad trip, man.

Time at last to share my 'night on bald mountain.' My night from heck. The Bastid Father of All Bad Trips.

Fantasia is one of the greatest head movies ever made and this whole trip can be compared quite closely in structure to the film's Bald Mountain segment.

The boo-boo: I mixed two chemicals that had no business getting organised within my system. The resulting trip split my head right open and eventually made a whimpering child of me.

Always try to have a guide on stand-by when tinkering. With no one to turn to at that particular juncture, I consulted my many volumes on the subject. The general consensus was: I would not/could not perish, but that I could expect 10-24 hours of waking nightmare. One even went as far as saying, "It will NOT be fun." Hospital would be able to offer zero help and would only make things worse.

This was gonna be a 'physician, heal thyself' challenge. I eventually triumphed and gained a powerful talisman in the process, but it was a terrifying brush getting there.

The first wave stripped me of all form. Normally, I'm at least the melting circle we know as Fuzzy Neutrino. This time, however, I had no corporeal form with which to get a fighting chance of a grip on anything... But I was painfully aware of utter mortality and forced witness to so much ugliness.

I was so much nothing trapped in a rotting skull. Every half-hour brought wave after wave of full-spectrum stimulation attack. Horrific imagery... cruel, whispery thoughts aligned against the entirety of my existence... Ice cold chills... An inability to find any amount of comfort... A powerful sense of impending doom...

This went on for an eternity. Absolutely the worst trip I've ever experienced in all my years. Stay tuned for part 2... My Ave Maria, if ya will...

"The Cady Ghost of Tulgey Wood (And the Mome Raths Outgrabe)" β€” The Psychedelic Snarl, β„–131
...
Uploading my entire output here cause the META PIGS must end...

Strange writing about an edgier trip you had when you had the bastid father of all bad trips the night AFTER it. I'll be sharing my 'night on bald mountain' next. Till then, here's an edge trip that did its best to quake me.

In the midst of a scene out of Carroll, clichΓ©d as that may be, a demented wood complete with little Mome Rath buddies, Fuzzy Neutrino felt the presence of some terrible revenant. While other mad things fled from its presence, the Mome Raths seemed drawn to it.

Fuzzy recognised it as the dreaded Cady Ghost, once a travelling companion of his. Despite the fact that he provides mere perspective, I will consider this a Neutrino trip.

The Mome Raths became Cady's clothing, issuing chirping warnings as they did so: "Don't even tackle this one, mate." Being familiar with the Cady Ghost, possessive of the ghastly modus operandi of an unraveller horror, Fuzzy heeded.

Tho I favour the beauty of things presented to me, and Cady is more beautiful than what is depicted here, I made the decision to fashion her as she appeared in a moment of unforeseen confrontational dread.

Any ugliness here is less Cady's true spirit and more a reflection of Fuzzy's inadequacy, as a molten drone, to grasp the complexity. The surprise of running into her out there and the spectre of Fuzzy's frailty are the real focus here.

On Fuzzy Neutrino: Unwilling (save that one time) to do a conventional self-portrait, Fuzzy is the best way to insert myself into my own work. The chemical-sautΓ©ed, melting circle that is Fuzzy Neutrino is, for all intents and purposes, the most accurate representation of me. Thru further art pieces presented sporadically, one will get to see Fuzzy take in happenings inspired by real-life experiences.

"Juniper Spire" β€” The Psychedelic Snarl, β„–130

Uploading my entire output here cause the META PIGS must end...

I've had a mean run of edge trips lately. [The night before this piece's original posting], I cracked my skull wide open and I'm still recovering. I got a concept, a new set of skills, and a powerful, protective ward out of the deal, but it was one baaaad trip, lemme tell ya.

"Juniper Spire" is the product of an earlier edge trip that was far more gentle in its dismantling of its psychonaut.

These vindictive trips have sparked a fire in me to explore the concept of the reptilian brain. Raw Id with both its blessings and curses. There will be a series of these.

I chose to tackle the lizard first, favouring an ancient antediluvian dragon and fantasy architecture twisted enough to match its dark elegance and primal-yet-complex brutality. A cunning, albeit mechanically cold, intellect was the vibe.

The titular Juniper herself was a bit of an afterthought. I personally dig when surreal landscapes that grind the abstract ridge feature more grounded figures interacting with them. The lady was painted in after the thing was completed and is little more than a doodle. To me, this works tho, as one certainly doesn't tend to feel particularly one's most combobulated within the trip. In not all trips does one belong, my friends.

I also needed a point of light to hammer home the idea of exorcising these dark vignettes with which I've found myself pelted.

An interesting undertaking. We've got a few other pieces to post first but I'm excited to probe furthur into this reptile theme.

"Planet of the Apes" β€” The Psychedelic Snarl, β„–129
...
Uploading my entire output here cause the META PIGS must end...

Facts: Planet of the Apes is one of my favourite films ever.

I've always been mortified by how spoilery modern promotional materials for the film tend to be. I did my best to come up with a concept that grasped both the film's surface themes and its rich subtexts.

The ultimate goal here, however, was to re-imagine the film as a head movie fit for grindhouse exhibition, complete with absolutely bogus exploitative tagline. One ya just know is a massive distortion of an extremely minor scene or throwaway line of dialogue.

I spent the bulk of my time working on the Lawgiver statue. I'll openly admit that poor Nova came out rather sloppy. I strongly regret that the method I used saw her as just bits that were bridges between statue sections. There is a bit of accidental thematic poetry to that, however... I also took a bit too much of a dose and wobbled my way thru the piece's creation, losing the way on several occasions. [Little did I know, my mind was once again in the process of another crucial breakdown/reconfiguration... Just you wait...]

But, hey, this sure was fun to create every step of the way!

"Planet of the Apes" β€” The Psychedelic Snarl, β„–129 ... "Ticklemonster (We're Talking Orchards)" β€” The Psychedelic Snarl, β„–128
...
Uploading my entire output here cause the META PIGS must end...

"Ticklemonster" was a ruthlessly demanding piece to which I surrendered willingly. Right, one Ticklemonster comin' right up!

This one's all about making light out of dark.

I found myself on the bed of some alien river or tributary. The gloomy underbelly just shy of the pastoral, sunlit regions where shiny minnows, crawdaddies, and the like darted about, basking in the sun's magnified, if distorted light. No, I was in the gnarlier part. The part where predator creatures dwell.

An eerie dim fell upon the place and I felt a fear rip through me with a short, sharp shock. There, out of the hypnotic slowdance of submerged foliage, was a terrifying beast with a seemingly endless amount of eyes. Impossible to distinguish between its predatory stare and a more docile gaze. The creature cast an horrifyingly chaotic impression that shook me to the core.

What's more, a cursory glance hinted at billions of these bastids lurking down here. We're talking orchards.

The voice of Mission β€” The Man with Eight Eyes surrounded me, nestling me within a warm cushion of reassurance.

"Exorcise the beast," he said. And so, I stared right into the creature's myriad of eyes and was at last able to see the thing's true pair. I dubbed the creature 'Ticklemonster' and went on my merry way.

This piece is my best attempt to capture this whole Ticklemonster scene so that the reader may experience at least part of it this groovy trip where great giggles came from purest terror.

Exorcise the beast.

"Curtis (Curtis Mayfield)" β€” The Psychedelic Snarl, β„–127

Uploading my entire output here cause the META PIGS must end...

This is the sixth in a series of far more involved pieces. They all aim for a quaint, nostalgic tone and detail work was top priority.

I wanted to end this little run with Curtis Mayfield, man. In the spirit of the previous five pieces, we took a relatively unorthodox approach.

Rather than setting out to capture the man's physical likeness, I wanted instead to grab the spirit and tone of the man's music. Unlike many other artists of the era, Curtis' voice (while certainly distinct and magnificent) wasn't big and functioned rather like any of the other instruments at his command. The music was one solid, fluid mass of beautiful.

Capable of delivering utter celebratory joy, urban grit, foxy groove, and scathing social commentary in one swoop, Curtis Mayfield was a genuine marvel.

I spun a number of his records during the process and let myself ride their currents until I settled upon a vision that summed the whole vibe up on a visual level.

I adore the tone and flow of the final product. An amazing subject, a beautiful dude, and a righteous task to have undertaken. Thanks, Curtis. Meet you in the music.

Dig this: When attempting to depict the Godhead, I'm gonna end up rocking similar themes every time. Seems, then, that we must use the opportunity to fool around with new techniques.

I began this piece by drawing the single line which would define Her visage against the landscape. I then toiled over said landscape's creation. The goal, as we went, was to create the rest of the Face solely thru strategic colouring of the landscape within the line's boundary.

This was fun and I loved it, but the initial result looked a bit crap. What you see here is the completely and painstakingly recoloured version.

I just love it to bits.

This is the fourth in a series of far more involved pieces. They all aim for a quaint, nostalgic tone and detail work was top priority.

"Milkweed" is largely the product of the song "You and Me and Rain on the Roof" by The Lovin' Spoonful. As previously established, I draw copious amounts of inspiration from John Sebastian and The Spoonful. Rather than literally interpret the lyrics and junk, I decided this time just to nab the feeling it gives me.

I had no real plan for the piece aside from the woman and that it was going to be another Rorschach. Interesting results once it was finally put together in the rough. The final product is the roughie fine-tuned. I got myself with this one cause, with no precise plan for the first time, I am able to see a number of different things that really say a lot about my mind 🀣🀣🀣

Know that we were completely innocent while creating it and are as baffled by the result as some of you are 🀣🀣🀣

It turned out alright. A few spots that tell I had no particular aim but I do dig how it is both wistful nostalgic and freaky randy. I can't really remove me from the equation and I apologise for that. The song is so wonderfully sweet, playful, and possessive of both graceful elegance and childlike innocence. Just lovely. I only hope the image is at least partially faithful to that.

The weird choo-choo train noises people make when they feel awkward, man...

This is the third in a series of far more involved pieces. They all aim for a quaint, nostalgic tone and detail work was top priority. Additionally, each piece is based on a different philosophical musing I managed to jot down during various chemical trips.

I had just witnessed a dude shapeshifting into what can only be described as a Disney's-Robin-Hood-style bird when another, far more Mechanical dude charged in with purpose. When this purpose was, stopped in its tracks, suddenly unfulfillable, he uttered the aforementioned choo-choo train sounds.

Train Dude seemed infinitely stranger to me than Bird Dude but both my zonky escape and a person's momentary turn into choo-choo train are not completely unrelated.

Difference being, with chemicals, ain't no need for train noises, I guess. Not that awkward doesn't still absolutely exist under influence. One perhaps simply feels fine being the fool.

This piece is an attempt to merge the two feelings, with joy playing about around the awkward as the subject presses on.

I'm so happy this one came out exactly as expected, if not a little better than that. It was seriously so much fun to paint.
